It is also a 10 minute drive to Blackbutt Reserve, where you can get up close to kangaroos, koalas and emus. The cottage is a few minutes drive to railway stations. There is a public bus stop about 100 metres from the cottage which provides a service to MarketTown shopping centre and the CBD.

Newcastle has many stunning beaches (within 3 km of Turnbull Cottage) and ocean baths at both Newcastle Beach and Merewether Beach. The beaches are great for family fun and are patrolled by surf lifesavers from October to March. It is a 50 minute drive to Port Stephens where whale and dolphin watching cruises can be taken. The Hunter Valley vineyards are a 45 minute drive away.
