Bundeena: Get Inspired by Your Surroundings
Bundeena is many things: a seaside retreat for Sydneysiders, a hub for nature lovers and a haven for artists. This part of the Cronulla Coast, an hour south of Sydney, is well-reputed for its beauty.
Discover scenic landscapes as you trek through the oldest national park in Australia, which borders the town. Stroll along a series of beaches, only a short walk from the main street. Participate in your favourite water sport - or learn a new one.
Throughout the year, Bundeena plays host to exhibits, markets and even studio open houses. To accommodate travellers of all sorts, holiday rentals in Bundeena range from luxurious penthouses to cozy cottages.
You can easily walk to most of Bundeena’s beaches from the town centre. There is Jibbon Beach, which is the locals’ pick. Jibbon is shaped like a crescent and lined by bushland, giving off the impression that you are miles from civilization. Gunyah Beach is the town’s best kept secret, as it can only be visited at low tide. Then there is Horderns Beach, only a stone’s throw from Bundeena’s boutiques and cafes. The waves crashing on Horderns Beach gave Bundeena its name - the Aboriginal term for ‘noise like thunder’. If you’re traveling with the kids, bring them to Bonnie Vale Beach, a long stretch of sand with lots of space for running around, a picnic area and BBQ facilities.
A Whole Host of Aquatic Activities
Bundeena, benefiting from a oceanfront position, is a hotspot for a wide range of water sports. If you would like to do some kayaking, local tour operators can guide you through the waters along the coast. Alternately, rent some gear at Bonnie Vale Beach and venture out on your own. Kayaking lessons are also offered.
Another popular activity is stand up paddle-boarding. You can also take classes and hire all the necessary equipment. Meanwhile, the town’s fishermen tend to cast their lines of the beach, so visitors can join in or simply watch them at work. To explore the underwater world, you might wish to do some snorkelling.
Get to know Bundeena on foot by trying out the area’s numerous trails. For an easy stroll, venture along the track connecting Bundeena to the smaller, equally picturesque village of Mainabar. For more challenging treks, hit the trails within the Royal National Park. The oldest national park in Australia, it has over 100 km of walking tracks.
To take in water vistas from the clifftops, you can walk all 26 km of the park’s Coast Track. If you prefer inland scenery, opt for the Forest Island Loop, which showcases the park’s lush rainforest. For even more views over the coast and a taste of local Aboriginal culture, make the journey up to Jibbon Headland on foot. Once you reach the top, you will see original rock engravings by the area’s Aboriginal people.
Arts and Culture in Bundeena
The natural beauty surrounding Bundeena has inspired many artists, who now call the town home. Visitors can get a glimpse into artists’ worlds - and studios - on the first Sunday of each month. For these events, over 20 of Bundeena’s artists open up their workshops to the public. Watch the creatives at work or purchase a painting, piece of jewelry or sculpture.
If your holiday doesn’t encompass the first Sunday of the month, you can still join an art workshop at one of the studios or go to the ever-changing exhibits at local galleries, which tend to feature works by artists from the area.
An arts and crafts market also takes place on the first Sunday of each month. Head to the Bundeena Saltwater Market to meet the region’s artisans and browse stalls selling homemade goods, clothes, food and more.
