About the Retreat
The owners had been looking for land in the local area for some time and purchased the initial landholding in 1990. It was part of a small (50 acre) dairy farm and the original owners cottage is the older house on the hill when you immediately enter the property off the Kalang Road.
The Retreat was built with the assistance of well known Sydney interior designer Pia Francesca, the design brief was simple ‘a modern, airy take on a typical sprawling Australian country house, must have wide verandas!’. A road was put in, the top of the hill where the house is was leveled and as the house was built the garden was established, prior to this, no trees or plants of any kind existed around the house. In later years additional land was purchased and the property size increased to ~ 100 acres, with the land extending to both sides of the river with the Southern border being the Kalang Road.
The Road in to the Retreat
Once you cross the small timber bridge to enter the property the road winds around to the Retreat approximately 700 meters where the Retreat is located on the top of a hill. It’s a gravel road, steep in parts so please take care. All cars can access it, regardless of weather. If it rains heavily, there can be areas of erosion so take particular care. If a cow is on the road, drive up to it slowly and it will move out of the way, if it doesn't it may be seeking a lift to town and it’s a matter for you if you care for its company.
The retreat will be open for your arrival. You will note that apart from the one bathroom there are NO curtains or blinds, so guests can enjoy the indoor/outdoor nature of living at the Retreat.
Eating and drinking.
The Retreat offers 4 options; there is a table that seats 8 inside, a table that seats 8 outside on the veranda, a smaller table that seats 4 on the veranda outside the kitchen and a BBQ table on the lawn that seats 6-8.
The BBQ is gas operated and provides grill, hot plate etc. The pizza oven is wood fired and does require some experience to operate. To get it to operating temperature, let the fire build slowly over 2-3 hours, too much wood and the pizza oven overheats, only small/medium pieces of wood are needed and once the oven roof turns white its good to go.
Filtered drinking water.
The water comes from the roof of the Retreat, its collected in a large underground rainwater tank and then pressure pumped to the house via 2 filters. There is filtered water available from the special tap located at the kitchen sink, this has an additional filter. This water is great for drinking.
All rooms’ doors and windows have fly screens and we know from experience that pleasant nights follow diligence in keeping these closed during the day.
When it’s warm.
The living, dining and kitchen areas have ceiling fans, as do all bedrooms.
When it’s cool.
The living area and each bedroom and bathroom has underfloor heating and generally this will have been switched on before your arrival in winter.
The open fire also warms and fire wood is supplied.
TV, Music and Movies.
The Retreat has Foxtel, fee to air TV and a selection of DVD's.
There is an extensive and eclectic range of books that should suit most tastes.
There is a private outside spa for 4 people that provides extensive district views and is amazing to srat spot in on clear nights.
A bit more on the Retreat
The Kalang River runs through the property and you can see it from the Spa. There are several very nice swimming holes along the river which runs around 1km through the property. There will be cattle around so leave all gates as you find them (open or closed). As you drive up to the Retreat and immediately before you enter the House garden, there is a track to the left, if you walk down it, it will take you to the back of the property and a different part of the river; our preferred swimming holes are in this area. It is also a lovely place for a picnic. I
General safety and wee beasties.
The Retreat is a farm and there are cattle, please do not disturb them and they won’t disturb you. It is generally safe to walk in the same paddocks they are in and they will generally move away from you, but exhibit common sense with all livestock.
Local fauna you might see include: wallabies, goanna’s, smaller lizards and lots of birds, finches, bower birds, parrots, spine bills, robins, eagles, honey eaters and more. There is a pair of binoculars in the house near the kitchen and several bird books.
Please note the Retreat has a strict 'no children and no pets' policy.
