Check out our photos and reviews - Freida is a bit special
We think Freida is charming, she offers country simplicity and peace. She has not had the modern refurbish and polish the floor boards are original but the house is classic and very comfortable. Many have said that a stay at 'Freida' is a special experience.
Named after the original owner, local pioneer midwife, Freida Hicks, who cared for women and babies across the Gleniffer valley in the late 1800s, 'Frieda' has always been a home of nurturing and care. You will get a sense of that as you come in the front gate.
We like to think of 'Freida' as her original owner might have been - generous, elegant and unpretentious.
She is a traditional Australian federation country homestead. Clad with the local cedar that the region was famous for, Freida is wrapped by large verandahs. The long central hallway is the spine of the house.
Each of the double size bedrooms come off the hallway, they have high ceilings and french doors that lead on to the verandahs.
The large kitchen and living areas are spacious, they were a carefully blended addition to the original home. The kitchen has a large stove and oven. There is a dishwasher and a large refrigerator.
The verandahs have hammocks and outside dining table.
The combination of the living areas and the verandahs mean that large numbers of people are accommodated with ease and comfort. There are spacious, central places for gathering and nooks for quiet and private time.
The property is on 10 acres. With established ornamental gardens, orchards and abundant birdlife and boarded by a groves of trees it has a haven-like feel.
There is lots to do and great ways to "not do":
Start out with a coffee on one of Freida's verandahs - watch the birdlife.
Our favourite waterhole on Bellinger River is 5 minute walk from the house. A swim here is the best way to begin and finish the day.
You must swim at one of the many waterholes on the pristine Never Never River anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes by car, depending on the hole. You can spend all day here under the trees with a picnic.
Many say Bellingen is the best town on the north coast they are locals : - it is full of warm welcomes, crafts, great food and local coffee that gives Melbourne a run for its money
Thora is 10 minutes drive from Freida along scenic Summervilles Rd. Stopping for a swim in the Rosewood Creek is a must
You can drive west from Thora and explore the magical Thora valley
Drive from Thora up Waterfall Way to the Dorrigo Plateau - any visit to our area has to include Dorrigo:
- see the traditional country town, have a burger at the milkbar or meal at the top pub
- go to the Dorrigo National Park Rainforest Centre - walk out on the Skywalk
- do a walk through the exquisite rainforest - there are short and long walks our favourite takes you to a waterhole that is the headwater of our Never Never river
Our mid north coast beaches are fabulous - go to Hungry Head, Urunga, Mylestom, all about 15 minutes from Bellingen.
Wash off the salt on the way home in the Bellinger River then finish the day with a beer or glass of champagne on the verandah
Check out our photos for a glimpse of these local treasures and moments.
