Hawks Nest: Getting Away From It All

Hawks Nest is more secluded than many of the other towns on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. Visitors tend to come here to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Uncrowded beaches, scenic trails and the possibility of spotting wildlife at almost every turn (or while you’re playing golf) are some holiday highlights.

Rent a kayak and head out on the Myall River, walk for miles on soft white sand or have a picnic on the beach as you watch the sunset. Suffice it to say, you are quite likely to spend your entire break outdoors.

Holiday rentals in Hawks Nest range from cosy cottages to beachfront apartments and spacious family homes.

Hawks Nest Beaches

Backed by tall pines, Jimmys Beach offers calm, protected waters favoured by families with young children. Take in views of the surrounding headlands and out across the bay to Port Stephens. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins in the waters close to shore. Don’t leave before evening falls, as you’ll be able to witness sunsets over the water.

Hit up Bennetts Beach for surfing and paddleboarding. There’s a patrolled area, which is usually the most crowded, but you can wander further away for some peace and quiet, feet in the soft white sand. You could keep going for hours, as the beach seemingly stretches on forever.

Neighbouring Myall Lakes National Park also offers 40 km of beaches with sections for swimming, surfing and fishing.

Hawks Nest Sports and Recreation

Hawks Nest residents love fishing. There are many spots from which to practice the craft, on the town’s beaches and along the banks of the Myall River. Try your hand at reeling in salmon or see if you can catch flatheads or tailor bream. Several jetties and boat ramps line the shores of the lake and the area’s beaches.

The calm waters of the Myall River are ideal for kayaking. Join a group tour and let your guide tell you all about the flora, fauna and human heritage. You can also hire kayaks from operators throughout town and venture out on your own.

Hawks Nest has an 18-hole golf course, which is open to the public and hosts golfing events throughout the year. Hawks Nest Golf Course is surrounded by bush, so you might see wildlife as you play, from dingoes to koalas to native bird species.

Bushwalking in Hawks Nest

Various trails wind through Hawks Nest, some of which are deeply entrenched in aboriginal history. Dark Point Walking Track path leads to a rocky headland, which has been a Worimi gathering site for over 4000 years. Uncover more Aboriginal history along the Mungo Walking Track, which weaves through Myall Lakes National Park. The entire path runs for 21 km but is an easy, flat walk.

Hikers seeking a workout can undertake the Yacaaba Headland Walking Track. Leaving from Bennetts Beach, walk up the steep path amidst banksia and angophoras. The track gets steeper and steeper, affording views over Seal Rocks and Tomaree Headland, as well as Cabbage Tree Island and Myall Lakes National Park.

Hawks Nest for Families

Hawk Nest is a very family-friendly holiday destination, starting with Jimmys Beach, where the sand is notoriously good for building sand castles.

Hawks Nest is also home to the Koala Zone Reserve, where you will be able to observe the furry creatures in their natural habitat. Try to visit the reserve early in the morning or in the late afternoon, when koalas are most likely to be actively moving about.

To let children burn off some more energy, head to Moira Parade Playground, which faces the Myall River. The park has equipment for toddlers and older children, as well as picnic and BBQ facilities, toilets and parking spaces.

Getting to Hawks Nest

Hawks Nest is a 2.5 hour drive from Sydney and an hour’s drive from Newcastle. If you don’t have access to a car, you can take a direct coach from either city.
