Wildlife, Birds and Whales
Acclaimed to be the most unpolluted river in Australia and one of the cleanest in the world, its correct name is Wooli Wooli which means “two water”. Its natural beauty and pristine condition makes possible an extraordinary opportunity to observe native flora and fauna that is unsurpassed anywhere else in Australia. There are 190 species of birds in and around Wooli village and the Wooli Wooli River not to mention the varieties unique flora.
On a walk to the river mouth, 3 kilometers from Wooli Serviced Apartments, you will certainly see some interesting birds as well as enjoying the peace and tranquility.
A great way to explore the river is by skiff with outboard motor or canoe or kayak. All of this is readily accessible during your stay at Wooli Serviced Apartments to spend a few days or a week.
Wooli is blessed with some of the world’s rarest and most beautiful birds and wildlife.
The Black-necked Stork (Jabiru) is a truly magnificent member of the world’s family big birds. It is now on the endangered species list but is seen occasionally on the Wooli River foraging for crustaceans which comprise its main diet. While not common anywhere, it is more readily seen in the billabongs and swamps adjacent to the small village of Tucabia, an easy drive from Wooli. Another impressive big bird often spotted in the countryside surrounding Wooli is the Brolga; the owners of Wooli Serviced Apartments, keen bird watchers themselves, have observed on rare occasions flocks of up to 200 Brolgas in fields where a corn crop was recently ploughed under.
Raptors like Wedge Tailed and Sea Eagles, Osprey and Brahminy Kites and Whistling Kites are also common sightings around Wooli. Other birds seen regularly are the largest of the cockatoo family, Sulphur Crested Black Cockatoos, as well as other members of the parrot group like Rosellas and Galahs.
The rare Coastal Emu, on the endangered list as well, is also a frequent visitor to the outskirts and surrounds of Wooli.
Animals seen in and around Wooli include various types of kangaroo and wallaby, possums at night, and echidnas.
Birds and wildlife are another feature the makes Wooli truly wonderful and a reason for visiting.
Wooli is a fantastic place to watch the migrations north and south of the largest creatures on the planet, whales. Each year as we head toward summer in the southern hemisphere, large numbers of Humpback and other species of whales migrate south from their winter sanctuaries in the tropics to their prime feeding grounds in Antarctica.
A two minute stroll from your apartment will get you to a vantage point from where, during the course of the day during their journeys north or south, numerous Humpback and other varieties of whale can be observed. It’s an amazing sight when you spot a mother and her calf, particularly when they venture close inshore as is fairly common.
For those who want an upfront and personal encounter, there is a fast charter vessel available.
