Welcome to Nutshell Farm.
A warm quaint romantic cottage with rustic charm sitting amid it's own grounds for solitude with views over the pond and 20 acres of gum forest. The Cottage comfortably suits two with a sofa bed in the living area for one person and a single bed for a forth person can be provided for upon request. Only 15 mins from city in the stunning wine region of the Tamar Valley. Keep a few dollars handy during the summer months as you drive past the Cherry and fruit farmgates.
Your likely to be greeted by Mia and Marley the farm cats and a greedy Muscovy Duck upon arrival The kitchen has everything you need to make a top hat worthy meal including a new built in electric stove top and oven, microwave, kettle, toaster and fridge. We provide you on arrival with complimentary fresh eggs, milk, butter, bread and orange juice. The bedroom is cosy with fabric upholstered linen walls and a queen size bed with plush feather and duck down pillows and duvet. Outside you can find The Cottage vineyard and the guest house Silkie Bantam chicks a very friendly breed of fluffy chickens, they shall be providing guests with fresh farm eggs from May, a seating area and a BBQ on the Cottage deck with views over the pond and forest opposite. A wicker picnic basket and rug for two is there for use, either take a stroll on our property or your welcome to go for a picnic at any local beauty spot or vineyard with the picnic set. Just make sure to return it as you found it On a cooler night relax infront of the wood stove in the living space with a hot cup of cocoa or your feeling a little more adventurous or romantic why not enjoy an open fire next to the lakeside at the fire pit. We can also supply you with a handmade s'mores kit fun for adults and children alike along with a flask of hot cider/mulled wine/hot cocoa from the in-house menu. Open fires at the fire pit only are dependent on state fire ban rules, please notify us if you wish to use the fire pit and we can provide you with wood and double check current state rules. We currently also have Limpy another Muscovy Duck sitting on a nest of 10 eggs we have no idea when they may hatch but you can quietly visit Limpy next to The Orchard Aviary.
PLEASE note; There are a few water sources on the property that are not fenced, children need to be appropriately supervised at all times when leaving the vicinity of the cottage and entering the farm space. It is a working environment, so many tools and duck doos around bring some old shoes if you can- just be mindful and enjoy the space.
We encourage guests to explore our 25 acres. The land holds up to 100 + fruit and nut trees, including a small hazelnut plot at the bottom of the property and 20 acres of wild native forest opposite the cottage deck. The cottage alone has its own kiwi trees, a work-in-progress vegetable plot and small vineyard. Watch out for Eleni the echidna as she roams around between the cottage, pond and plum trees. Dusk also brings an abundance of wildlife including wallabies, birds and if your lucky enough you may catch a glimpse of the Tasmanian Tiger ;
Interaction with guests
As much or as little as is liked, we do like to have our own time in the evenings so we are not available from 7pm onwards unless there is an emergency.
Upon arrival key will be in a lockbox, check in details are provided once booking is confirmed.
Other things to note
The cottage is close to the city and airport yet situated amongst wilderness and the serenity of trees and plenty of wildlife Swan Bay is next to the Tamar
River at the point you can find a nature reserve protected for its abundance of Wedgetail Eagle nests and endemic wildlife including Pandemelons. Penguins at Low Head are just a small drive up the road, many guests staying with us make the opportunity to see these little aquatic creatures. Hillwood farmgate is a 10 minute drive, over seasonal months you can pick your own strawberries, raspberries and red currants, there is also a cafe providing yummy cream teas and pancakes. If you after a cooked breakfast or brunch a bit closer you can find the Bean in the Country Cafe only 2 mins away on John Lees Drive at the end of Los Angelos Road towards the highway.
