From an elevated position with sweeping, uninterrupted views of the main alpine range, snow covered in winter, Alcheringa Alpine Retreat is a high quality small B & B, facing north on acreage, that offers excellent levels of warmth, comfort and hospitality. It is one of few properties in Australia that is a permanently occupied home above the snow-line at 1300 metres.
It is an ideal get-away-from-it-all B & B, yet still within 20 minutes on an all weather road from Jindabyne with its excellent shopping and restaurants/cafes. Catering for up to a maximum of 4 persons within only one party, it is particularly suited to a single person, a couple, a small family with one older child, or 2 maximum of 2 young children, or possibly a small party of 3/4 adults who know each other and are willing to share the en-suite bathroom. ALL RATES INCLUDE A CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST. THE BASE RATES QUOTED ARE FOR UP TO FOUR PEOPLE STAYING IN ONE PARTY.

Alcheringa is a wonderful place for children to safely run free and play, whilst still within a fully fenced and gated property. In the acre and a half immediately in front of the house they are in full view. When snow falls and settles, the opportunities to have fun just multiply! Alcheringa is the complete opposite to apartment/town house accommodation.
The accommodation consists of;
* A main double bedroom with queen sized bed & adjoining large en-suite bathroom; the room has lovely garden views.
* A large lounge dining room exclusively for guests, with sweeping views of the alps from its bay windows. This room also includes a wide screen TV, Blu Ray DVD/CD player, AND FROM JANUARY 2016, FOXTEL PLATINUM, There is an excellent and enclosed wood burning fire (with safety surround for children).
*A second double bedroom off the lounge/dining room with a queen sized bed. This room has charming garden views to the rear of the property.
*An enclosed entry sun-room and small hall to handle coats, boots, skis, etc.
*Ample easy level parking on hard stand.
The breakfasts at Alcheringa are continental style. Guests also have their own small refrigerator/freezer, and breakfast buffet table with kettle, toaster, coffee machine, milk frother etc. so that tea and coffee can be made at any time.
The house is fully double glazed and insulated, and thus offers a high level of warmth and comfort all year round. Most of the year the wood fire is just for ambience; although there is extra heating in the en-suite bathroom. Potable water comes from a permanent spring, deep under the montane plain in front of the property. Electric power is reciprocated with the grid from a 4.2 KW photovoltaic, solar system on the roof, making the homestead a sophisticated energy efficient property.
There is never any lack of things to do;
*Walk 3 acres of close mown lawns and paddocks, looking for, and at, the abundant wildlife that come and go from the property, and out from the wooded areas on the land.
*Or just enjoy the beautiful views, with its ever changing weather and light , including clear mountain air evenings with its myriad of stars.
*Perhaps enjoy the daily frog chorus from the large pond in the foreground of the house.
*Practice your pitching and chipping using our supply of golf clubs and balls.
*Then, when sufficient snow is present, try out your ski legs or snowboarding skills on the Alcheringa beginner slopes, or just toboggan, make a snowman, enjoy a snowball contest.
During the evening, or perhaps on inclement days, there are over 100 DVD's to choose from, Foxtel to watch for movies, documentaries etc.,books to read from the small eclectic library, (including ones for children) and games to play.
There are daily sightings of wallabies, kangaroos, deer, alpine hares, and many bird types, (all quite close to the house) plus occasional sightings of wombats, echidna, emu, eagles, hawks and alpine skinks.
Further afield, but mostly within 30 minutes, there are;
*Skiing at the main NSW skifields which is 35 minutes away to the Perisher Ski Tube, and a further 10 minutes to Thredbo.
*All of Jindabyne to enjoy, 20 minutes easy driving.
*Easy walks adjacent to the land, 4WD adventures down to the Snowy River & elsewhere, mountain and road biking, canoeing, swimming and sailing on Lake Jindabyne, horse riding, and fishing in the Snowy Mountain rivers and lakes and specialist trout farms.
*Play golf at the 18 hole grass greens Snowy Mountains Golf Club at Berridale, where one of your hosts is a Member, you can join in the Club Competitions if you have a Golf Australia handicap. Green Fees are very modest, currently $20 per person, less for Juniors. Except for very rare snowy days this is an all year round course. You can also play the Thredbo course out of the winter season.
*The owners also have an active art studio and country furniture workshop on the property. Examples of both are an integral part of the guest accommodation, and all are welcome to join the owners for small tours. If purchases are made, or orders taken, there is a guest discount. We can also arrange special "en plain air" drawing and painting getaways.
There is easy year round access to Alcheringa, although 2WD vehicles may need chains in the depths of winter, which have to be carried anyway for entry into the Kosciuszko National Park.
