Culburra Beach is 185 kilometres south of Sydney and 20 kilometres east of Nowra. Travelling south, take the Princes Highway to Nowra, cross the Shoalhaven River, turn left onto Greenwell Point Road and follow the signs.

Known until 1916 as Wheelers Point after the first white settler, it became Culburra (meaning sand in the local Aboriginal dialect), which, in itself, is a good reason to visit.

Entering town on the road from Nowra, you don't see most of the physical attractions: Culburra's long cream-sand beach; Penguin Head guarding Warrain Beach and the lookout, which has majestic north-south views to Shoalhaven Heads and Point Perpendicular; ocean-fed Lake Wollumboola with its variable water depths depending on in-flows; the well-patronised beachside caravan park adjacent to the Crookhaven Heads lighthouse; or the mouth of the Crookhaven River, which has safe boating but somewhat tricky access to the ocean.

Local Attractions

The house is so close to Warrain Beach you will only need your towel and sunscreen. Catch a few waves or rays and head back to the house for an outdoor shower. Almost daily in summer you'll see pods of dolphins lazily heading north and, in winter, migrating humpback whales are an ever-present sight.

Prime coastal locations aren't complete without good fishing and Culburra is no exception. Every morning in summer the boat ramp at Orient Point, where the Shoalhaven and Crookhaven rivers meet before flowing to the sea, is busy from daylight to dusk with trailers unloading and loading fishing craft. Some boaties choose to stay in the river or motor towards Greenwell Point and the entrance to the Shoalhaven River, where there are plenty of leatherjackets and smaller fish. Better equipped and more seaworthy craft usually head to the open sea where marlin, tuna, other game fish, decent-size snapper and other varieties are abundant. Fish-cleaning facilities next to the boat ramp attract an ever-present flock of pelicans.

Culburra's proximity to other attractions is a plus. The coastal towns of Currarong - with Honeymoon Bay, Callala Bay - overlooking Jervis Bay and Greenwell Point - known for oysters and fish are all 15 minute drive. Further a field the Husky Pub, Hyams Beach - officially the whitest sand in the world, and Booderee National Park in Jervis Bay are less than 40 minute drive. Beautiful Berry with all its charms, knickknacks and sweets are always a delight. For the kids, both big and small, Jamberoo Theme Park, NSW largest theme park is a 50 minute drive to Kiama.

For those into mountain biking, there are 4 cross country trails and a 5 minute downhill course 15 minute drive, or 40 minute ride towards Nowra. Surrounded by state forest the tracks include the renowned Coondoo and SuperBowl cross country tracks.

Wakeboarding on the Shoalhaven is a short drive and provides a day of smooth water and scenic views. You may even run into Australia's best wakeboarders, Josh Sanders or Amber Wing.

There are numerous golf courses in the area including the Jamberoo Golf Course, Kiama Golf Club, Gerrringong Golf Club,Calderwood Golf Club,Shellharbour Links, Nowra Golf Club and Mollymook Golf Course.

Otherwise, whatever the weather conditions, a stroll along the beach or feet up reading a good book with the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean is hard to beat.

In the evening you may like to visit the award winning Butterfactory Restaurant in Pyree or stay closer to home and enjoy the food and beverages of the Culburra Bowling Club. Alternatively, you may wish to visit our local fisherman at Orient Point before he sends his Oyster's catch to Sydney, cook a nice BBQ and stay at home.

Other local services: tennis courts, Bowling Club, Chinese restaurant, pizzeria, cafes, bottle shop, hairdresser, beautician, bakeries, petrol stations, Post Office, Woolworths supermarket, chemist, fishing tackle & bait shop, surf shop, and access to atms. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent well equipped property We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Chateau Surfside. There were 12 of us with relatives from the UK and USA aged from 18 months to 80. The house was very spacious and very well equipped for everyone with everything we needed. First time we have spent time on the South Coast and all agreed it is a great place to holiday with some beautiful beaches.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great house and location This house was perfect for our mixed group of adults and children. With two living areas there was plenty of room for all of us. Access to the beach and park was quick and easy, and the backyard was huge - perfect for a game of 'bull rush'. The tyre swing was a big hit with the younger children. The outdoor BBQ/dining area was also a hit. The children have declared this the best beach holiday ever!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic weekend away! This house is perfect for a large group or group of families. Large open areas and spacious bedrooms made it so manageable. The outdoor shower was a hit after a swim at the beach across the road and the large kitchen and BBQ area made meals a breeze (along with the huge dining tables inside and out). The PlayStation and large back yard also copped a workout too! Being so close to local shops, clubs and lake/beach was convenient and the locals were all so friendly to deal with. Great house! Great Location!

Location was excellent close to the beach and the lake. Particularly liked the fact that all linen and towels was included in the rental. Highly recommend this property to family or sporting groups.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely stay! Myself and 15 friends stayed at the Chateau Surfside on the June long weekend. The house was very clean and tidy, there was plenty of room for all of us to sleep comfortably, the electronic pin code entry was fantastic (saved the hassle of worrying about who has keys etc) and the outdoor table & bbq was great! The house is in a great location- we hope to return during Summer so we can enjoy days at the beach and walk 5 minutes back to the house. Overall 5 stars!
