Culburra Beach is the ideal beach retreat offering a quiet sanctuary. The house is about 8 houses from entry to Culburra beach at about the middle of the beach providing a pleasant half hour walk with way to each headland. The beach is dune protected and always very quiet even in the peak Summer season giving it a South Pacific feeling of seclusion. There are many local beaches and riverine walks and coastal bush walks to fill your days. Wollumbulla Lake is a native bird sanctuary. The Shoalhaven River estuary provides many fishing spots including Curley's Bay to Greenwell Point. Jervis Bay beaches are a short drive away providing much to explore. Commerong Island is assessible via the car ferry providing yet another seculded coastal environment to explore.

We service our linen and towels in house, our fee of $240 includes cleaning and linen for up to 12 guests.

There are essentially two beaches in Culburra;

Culburra Beach, which is a few houses away and Warrain beach, which is a short drive away.

The beach takes just under an hour to walk the full length. Tilbury Cove on the south side is always very sheltered and a great place to swim. Both the north and south are patrolled in the summer holidays. Tilbury takes about 20 minutes to walk to or you can drive via Penguin Head Road and park on the headland near the children’s play ground and walk down the track to the beach. If Culburra is very windy try Tilbury as it faces a different direction and is usually not exposed. If you need to find more shelter head to Jervis Bay beaches such as Red Rock, or Beecroft Weapons Range beaches such as Long Beach, Honeymoon Bay from where you can walk to the secluded Target beach.

Warrain beach is rather rough at the point that it forms a border with lake Wollumboola, but it is calmer, and patrolled on weekends at the Surf Life Saving Club. In fact, by walking up or down Warrain beach, you can find just-about any kind of swimming conditions you want, from calm to very surfy. If you choose to swim at Warrain beach near the lake not advisable, the water’s edge is very steep at high tide, but very flat at low tide.

Walking the beach is always best at low tide.

Tide predictions can be found at Willy Weather, Culburra tides are typically 45 minutes later than Sydney Fort Denison. If you’re looking for really calm swimming waters Jervis Bay beaches are great.

Swimming on either Culburra or Warrain beach, particularly just in front of the Surf club, you may see Dolphins with their fins jumping up and down. Sharks usually travel alone, and their fins are seen as a consistent protrusion above the water, travelling in a straight line.

Surf lessons can be organised in Culburra by calling . You can join a 1 ½ hour class for $35 and keep the board for DI for the rest of the day for an additional $25, or if you have a group of 3 or more, organise a private lesson for the group.

The secret path to lake Wollumboola, can be found opposite number 54 East Creasent, to discover the lakes-edge, hidden from all other views. It is an Intermittently Closing and Opening Lagoon ICOL which means that with king tides and some other times, it opens on to the sea. As a result, it is a salt-water lake. The smell of Lake Wollumboola is that of sulphur, from the rotting seaweed and reeds which are more exposed than in other, deeper lakes. In fact, when the lake smells the most, it also offers the greatest attraction to birdlife, including as many as 30 different species of birds, of which the most common are the Crested Tern, Plovers, Stints, and of course Sea Gulls and Swans. Lake Wollumboola is one of just a few sanctuaries for the endangered bird species, the Little Tern. A double-sided beach separates Lake Wollumboola from the Pacific Ocean, and parts of the beach are cordoned-off as a sanctuary for the Little Tern. Dogs are not allowed on the beach, and bait

has been laid for foxes. The little Tern nests on the sand dunes of Warrain beach between November and February every year. Nests of up to 3 eggs simply look like a few pebbles on the ground, hence the need to cordon of areas to protect them from being stepped on. In flight, the little Tern is easy to spot, by virtue of its skinny wings, making it looks almost like a W. Lake Wollumboola and Warrain beach are a favourite bird-watching venue in NSW, with `twitchers bird watchers’ in the area nearly every weekend, and there are regular guided tours conducted by National Parks and other organisations. Check on the National Parks web site for summer excursion guided tours.

About a half hour from Culburra is the quiet hamlet of Currarong.

Just beyond Currarong is Abraham’s Bosom Beach. Currarong is an incredible formation of rocks, forming Currarong Rock Pools, that creates a natural ocean-water swimming pool, fine for novice swimmers and snorkelers.

is just 15 minutes away, and is effectively the fishing port for the area.

You can hire a metal dingy at the Angler’s Rest Boat Hire opposite the main wharf for $45 for the first 2 hours.
