Gerroa: Nature, Adventure and Heritage
Do not mistake Gerroa simply for a sleepy seaside town. The small village nestled on the northern side of Seven Mile Beach may only be home to 400 or so full-time residents, but visitors have a plethora of activities to choose from.
Spend your break riding the waves, fishing or windsurfing. Hike along winding coastal paths or through age-old forests. Relive the excitement of the crowd that watched Australia’s first flight to New Zealand take off as you visit the Kingsford-Smith monument. Or, hop in the car, kids in tow, and head to nearby water parks, zoos and horse riding facilities.
Many holiday rentals in Gerroa are only steps from the beach, so you can wake up and fall asleep to the sound of the waves.
Gerroa is set on the shores of Seven Mile Beach, a popular surfing destination. This long stretch of sand links Gerroa and Shoalhaven Heads. You will often see windsurfers and kitesurfers taking advantage of the rougher waters. Fish for whiting in the summer and many other fish species year-round. The beach is patrolled on holidays, weekends and during the summer.
Werri Beach is another great spot for surfing and fishing. The water is teeming with Australian salmon and even some snapper weighing up to 6 kg. Werri Beach also offers a rock pool and a separate smaller oceanfront pool for children. Both of Gerroa’s beaches have safe areas for swimming, but always be mindful of potentially high winds and strong waves.
Regional History and Heritage
The lazy coastal towns of the South Coast are teeming with history and Gerroa is no exception. When Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith piloted the first Australian commercial flight, he took off on Seven Mile Beach.
Recently, a lookout commemorating the historical flight was erected, from which visitors have access to scenic coastal views. To learn more about Kingsford Smith’s story and delve deeper into regional heritage, visit the Gerringong History Museum.
Travelers can also see restored vintage train cars at the Illawarra Light Railway Museum, a short drive from Gerroa. When you are there, hop aboard the miniature train replicating the locomotives of yesteryear. The museum is partially housed in an old train station and ticket booth, built in the late 1800s.

Take in ocean views and walk the length of the Coastal Trail which connects Gerringong to Kiama. The journey leads you past some of the area’s natural highlights, such as the Kiama Blowhole, Bombo Headland, and a series of picturesque beaches.
Go for a stroll along Seven Mile Beach National Park’s wooden walkways leading to scenic lookouts and quiet stretches of sand. Alternately, opt for the Sand Track, which runs under an unspoilt forest canopy. The park is a favourite local spot for picnics.
