Overlooking the Barrengarry Mountain range this beautiful house is an oasis that we have found no one wants to leave. The property is located atop 6.6 acres of undisturbed rainforest midway between the villages of Kangaroo Valley and Berry. Lyra is a unique house, hand crafted from materials sourced from the propertys surrounds. Much of the timber has been felled on-site and walls built from rocks and boulders found on the land. The kitchen ceiling linings had a previous life as the hard-working roof of the old Kangaroo Valley Hall and heralds its vintage marker stamps. The front living area with its glass roof panels delights through the seasons as a portal to the sky and the chance to spot the odd eagle overhead while lying on the lounge in front of the slow combustion wood fire chosen for its efficient German engineering. The back living room is a cocoon of sofas for curling up into a good book or enjoying your favourite film. The mud brick walls keeps the ambient temperature of the house wonderfully insulated from the heat of summer and the cold of winter.
The beating heart of Lyra, however, emanates from her generous fully equipped kitchen and gorgeous outdoor entertaining area which operates as an open air living room with its large wood-fired pizza oven, dining table commissioned from the timbers of a Sydney Wharf and mid-century cane lounges upholstered in Pierre Frey fabrics. A BBQ is available which is stored in the large shed. Guests are also sure to enjoy the outdoor spa where you can sit back and relax under the star lit sky.
Keen cooks themselves, the owners sought guidance from a chef on equipping the kitchen for guests; hence the professional Kitchen Aid, thermal circulator, no nonsense food processor, stick blender, spice grinders, hand mixer, cooks knives, traditional carbon wok and rice cooker, fry pans, sauce pans, heavy duty roasting trays, cast iron stove top panini press, baking trays and tins and enough stainless steel bowls to order any cooks mis-en-place.
The pantry has been carefully stocked with a capsule of herbs, spices and condiments from Asia through to the Middle East. There is a dedicated area for making bread, pizza dough and pasta with a store of strong flours, salt and yeast to match. The fridge is stocked with bottles of still and sparkling cold water that can be restocked using the soda stream. A Nespresso coffee machine is also provided BYO coffee pods.
The details are clearly important to the owners who have also filled the kitchen with a bespoke collection of mid-century and vintage crockery and ceramics that have been lovingly collected over the years. Youll have fun reminiscing over trips in the car as a child or hanging out in your Nanas kitchen as you wash up the dishes with a vintage linen tea-towel.
The property has three private bedrooms with the main downstairs bedroom having a queen bed and its own ensuite. The two upstairs bedrooms have a queen and a double bed and share the second bathroom. There is also a sofa bed with pull-out trundle in the upstairs bedroom that can accommodate 2 extra little ones single bed duvets and extra pillows can be found in the cupboard but please bring your own single bed linen. There is an extra powder room off the back living room.
As custodians of Lyra we honour the environmental tradition upon which our home was created and endeavour to limit or eliminate single use plastics wherever possible exercising the discipline of thorough recycling. We ask our guests to please do the same. Reusable shopping bags are available in the kitchen for the odd shopping trip and we ask you to take home or recycle any plastics you may bring. We do not offer single portion items instead opting for communal pantry and bathroom basics which you are welcome to use.
Please Note: As a gesture of goodwill we inherited the previous owners friendly middle-aged cat. Her bed is located in the wood shed and our sweet little friend might come and say hello during your stay.
