Description

A pastoral haven commanding both country and coastal views, surrounded by magnificent old Morton Bay Fig Trees, Stony Hill Cottage is a charming country home found down the end of a private road. It has a separate studio, and is set on the hilltop amidst prime dairy country. It was originally a farmworkers cottage on the dairy and has been expanded over the years. Opening at the end of March 2018, the newly renovated home has an extra upper level with huge master bedroom and ensuite plus study. There is an expansive deck upstairs commanding magnificent 270 degree view and it is a mere 5 minutes drive to famous Mollymook and Narrawallee beaches. It is an ideal place to relax and unwind in either summer or winter. A short walk to the historic town of Milton, you can choose between coastal, country or cultural pursuits whilst enjoying the feeling of being tucked away from the hustle bustle. Milton has some delightful shops and boutiques, with some quirky & interesting ones as well and it's own theatre, the Milton Theatre, which has some class acts. You can look at the facebook page to see what's coming up during your stay. There are also some lovely restaurants to more than satisfy the desires of dedicated foodies.

The renovated cottage consists of four bedrooms, 2 inside bathrooms downstairs with traditional bath, brand new kitchen with SMEG oven, combined dining/living area and laundry facilities washer & dryer, 55 " LG OLED55C7T LCD HDMI smart TV downstairs, soundbar, wifi, HiSense Smart TV and sound bar upstairs, BBQ and log fired combustion heater complete the picture. The house sleeps up to 8 with one king master bedroom, two queen rooms and a room with two king single beds. Included in the tariff is the artists studio which is a large and airy separate building, with lovely natural light and afternoon breeze. It has an additional bathroom with shower and a table tennis table has been added to the studio for guests enjoyment. Additionally, a DVD/TV is set up for those who might like to watch a DVD. It's ideal for an artists week/weekend with plenty of visual inspiration to be found from the beautiful Moreton Bay fig trees and surrounding countryside.

At sunset you can stroll along the private road, that is actually part of the dairy, beneath the corridor of fig trees and look out towards the ocean beyond Narrawallee, or back westwards to the escarpment. Or simply sit on the deck with a wine and just soak up the views.

It is a 5 minute walk into town for breakfast at a variety of great spots including Pilgrims Cafe and Duke & Co. For fine dining we recommend St Isidore's in Croobyar Rd, a hatted restaurant, which has fabulous food and a beautiful location; the chef, Alex Delly, trained with Rick Stein tell him Kate Irish sent you. Cupitts winery is also to be recommended; the food is delicious and the pastoral views over Burrill Lake are lovely. You might like to dine at award-winning Rick Steins Bannisters Restaurant on the headland. Another option is Tallwoods at Nth Mollymook for outstanding tapas style meals. A more recent addition to the dining scene is Bannister's Pavillion Terrace roof top bar. For those just wanting nibbles and a drink there is a wine bar behind the surf shop called Harvest Bar. It often has live music on Sunday afternoons. It's a popular place for the locals, as is an old favourite restaurant called the Tipsy Fig, behind Pilgrims. If you feel like eating in, and you don’t want to start your getaway in the supermarket, check out Gourmet Peach Holiday Hampers for a delicious selection of locally sourced South Coast produce. Visit their website for more information. For cheap eats, and family dining, I would recommend the Milton Woodfire Pizza and for those who prefer a picnic, pick up some fabulous fish and chips from The Fish Shop at Burrill Lake.

The South Coast Wine Show takes place in January of each year at the Milton Showground and is a showcase for wines from the South Coast . September also offers Artfest for those with an artistic bent.

Lake Conjola is only 10-15 minutes away where you can enjoy sailing, fishing, waterskiing and swimming. In summer, we have hand fed stingrays at Washerwoman's Beach at Bendalong. A bit more secluded but very pretty beaches and worth a visit.

For those with a coffee bent, a Nespresso machine is provided and a few pods provided to get you going but its hard to get a bad coffee in Milton with so many great cafes. You may bring your own pods or order direct from the Nespresso website.

Linen is provided at an additional cost of $30 per bed and $5 per towel should you wish to have the beds made up; alternately you may bring your own. Please note that when you book online, the amount charged for linen will reflect a booking for 8 people, so please contact the owner for smaller groups.

Artists Retreat

Great inspiration for artists, in fact the studio was built by an artist and the last 3 owners have been artists. Let me know and I'll leave out some drop sheets. The table tennis table easily folds away for more creative space.

Bushwalks

There are many great walks in the region.

Of the walks listed on the website we recommend:

1.Pigeon House Mt - hard climb but worth it 3-4 hours depending on fitness

2. Mt Bushwalker about 3 hours return relatively easy – stunning views second half along plateau – very rewarding – picnic on ridge

3. Mt Rusden about 3 hours return easy - fabulous views at final lookout. Varying terrain along firetrail route, plenty of birdlife

4. Florence Head about 2 hours max relatively short and easy - First part same as Mt Rusden walk and not as varied in terrain – take a cut left off trail to unmarked escarpment lookout about half way along – then follow to end to lookout facing south.

The last 3 are all accessed via Pointers Gap Rd just north of Milton. Don’t take the earlier Pointers Rd by mistake – it’s a dead end. Follow Pointers Gap Rd to the top of the escarpment – you will pass under some amazing overhanging cliffs. When you get to the top there is a turn off to the car park lookout on the left. Worth a visit for the view back over Milton and the coast. Then take the road to the north for Mt Bushwalker or South to the start of Florence Hd/Rusden tracks. Have a look at the shoalhaven website for a list of favourite walks.

For more information, please visit the website for the South Coast NSW which lists things to do.
