Altona was built right in the centre of town in 1905 initially to house a live-in policeman and his seven children - as it then took a full day on horseback from the main police station in Moss Vale to arrest duelling miners, timber fellers and railway workers fuelled by grog supplied by the newly opened pub. Over time the house was also used as the Savings Bank, Post Office and Electoral Office which accounts for its peculiar key system making it very difficult to break into Today you can enjoy modern conveniences and all the Highlands have to offer from this charming residence steeped in history, a mere 1.5 hours’ drive from Sydney.

The house comprises 4 bedrooms: The Yellow Room was the policeman's entrance and his office. The Gold Room appropriately named was the Bank, PO and Electoral Office. The Red and Green Rooms were the personal space of Constable White and his family. The laundry and mudroom were part of the original Altona but the kitchen and two bathrooms have been modernised and are fully equipped for your comfort and convenience. The former back verandah has been enclosed and now houses a 12 seat dining table for your guests to enjoy a feast together. The original stone floor of the jail remains outside and now hosts one of the two outdoor dining settings. The original stables now have hot and cold running water to a vanity no bathroom and house a queen bed and a bunk bed - ideal for an extra couple or a teenage sleepout.

Enjoy the central location. Altona is set right in town and is walking distance to the Community Centre where regular functions are held ranging from tango to movies, monthly piano mornings and farmer’s markets. Solar Springs with amazing facilities is available for a small fee up the hill. Near the RSL are playing fields and a swimming pool. The train station is just across the road and there are cafes either side of the house. This is the ideal accommodation for many of the local cycle races, car rallies and collectors’ gatherings, not to mention Brigadoon and Highland Flings, when Bundanoon, the seat of ex-patriot Scots becomes the crowning glory of the Highlands. Bowral, Berrima and other notable Highland villages are all within 20-minute radius of this lively character filled village that is Bundanoon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Charming, Spacious and comfortable We booked Altona at the last minute for a family get together for my mother's 75th inbetween Xmas and New Year. We had toddlers and teenagers and everywhere in between so when we looked at the weather forecast, after we booked, and then realised the property didn't have air conditioning we were concerned. We stayed for 5 days and had 4 days over 30C. The house was beautifully cool and an absolute pleasure. We loved gin and tonics on the front verandah, sitting in the shade in the afternoons out the back and exploring everything in the village and the surrounding areas. Many shops in the village were closed on the 27th and the Chinese and Pizza closed throughout. It didn't bother us. The cafes were great for coffee and snacks and the kitchen well equipped to cook in. Great stove and oven. We washed up by hand so no issue with the dishwasher. Teenager/bookworm loved the stables and even they were not too hot for sleeping. Lovely holiday!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Family gathering We had a family get together (group of 10 adults) at Altona on the long weekend, with half of our group travelling from Sydney and the other half from Canberra/Wagga. In addition to the main house we also used the Stables. The house was nearly perfect with the pluses being a long dining table big enough to seat 10 people, plenty of fridge pace (one large fridge freezer and two smaller fridges), excellent location close to everything (walking distant to shops and the pub), lovely antique furniture, beautiful decor, two very functional bathrooms, comfortable beds, plenty of parking spaces. The minuses: the living spaces were a bit cramped, which was due to a few reasons : we found that we were all crowded into the dining room and hardly used the lounge room at all. Mainly because we either wanted to watch TV or play cards/scrabble and couldn't do either of these in the lounge room. There is a tv in the lounge room but it can only be used to watch DVDs as it is not connected to a tv receiver and there isn't anywhere (except the floor) to lay down the scrabble board or cards. This made the dining room quite noisy and cramped when we were all competing for TV and table space. We also lit the fire the first night we were there and then had to open up the house to let the smoke out (our party are experienced with open fires and we put this down to poor quality wood that was slightly damp from the rain). The other big minus is an extremely small dishwasher which is only half the size of a regular dishwasher. We found that we had to put it on numerous times each day to keep on top of the dishes. The kitchen is pretty well stocked and the only thing we really missed were champagne flutes (we had to go and buy some). All in all we enjoyed our stay and the house and gardens are beautiful and in a great location. I am not sure that I would stay here again as there is another house that we usually have on the outskirts of the village that has much bigger living spaces and is better suited to groups (the only reason we stayed at Altona is because the other house was already booked).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding old world charming property Amazing. Loved the fireplace and the antiques. Each bedroom of a different colour. Loved that too. So sick of all white bedspreads. The location was brilliant - just pop out to a few restaurants - traditional Chinese, the coffee shops, best pizzas ever at a takeaway with a back garden to dine in. The property made us relaxed and happy. Loved the garden with several outdoor seatings and a great barbecue. Near lovely national park walks and bike trails and the amazing glow worm glen. People were so friendly.
