Relax and enjoy your stay in the comfort of Atherton House, one of the oldest houses in Avalon. Built in the mid 30's, the house is typical of its style for that time. With Art Deco features, the double brick stands on a sandstone base, beautiful timber floors and sash windows throughout. There are 11 doors leading outside which means you always have airflow and sunlight pouring into the house. The house faces due North and has refreshing sea breezes gently flowing through the trees. It is, however, protected from the ferocity of the southerly.
The main house consists of three bedrooms, 2 Queen & 1 Double. The kitchen is a delicious aqua colour that complements the sea, with Corian benchtops, AEG & Asko appliances and everything that twists and turns in the large soft-close drawers! The kitchen flows through to the dining room which in turn is connected to the living room through 2 large glass doors. Punchy, fun colours in the living room make it a happy place to be. A 46 inch flat telly with sound-bar & Blue-Ray VCR sits in a cabinet just near the beautiful, large open fireplace. Enjoy snuggling up in front of the fire on a cold winter's night. The main bathroom has recently been fitted with a large shower area, heated floors, 2 large heated towel rails, basin & toilet. Please note there is no ensuite as they weren't invented in the 1930's.
Bifold doors leading from the kitchen flow out onto a patio and lawn which look over the 11m pool. Tiled in aqua mosaics, the pool is heated and has a swim-out for easy access. The cabana is the perfect marriage for the pool. It sits slightly higher and overlooking the pool. It has two fully upholstered sofas, chairs and ottomans, enough to seat 8 people comfortably. There's a mini-fridge in the cupboard and a music system where you can plug in your own iPod. The beautiful stone-walling is a huge feature of the outdoor area and gives the cabana a resort-like feel. There is also a fabulous outdoor shower and a bathroom tucked under the roof garden!
Leading up stone & timber stairs, sits the cottage. This is a self contained building that is also made of brick with a tiled roof. It comprises a double bedroom, bathroom with shower, toilet & basin, and a kitchen/living room. There is also a flat screen telly here, and a large, sun-drenched deck to sit out on and overlook the house, pool & cabana. Although the main house has no air-conditioning, the cottage does!
Next door to the house, there is a small public park which has only one set of swings newly installed by council. The swings are for little kids so it's a quiet park and a lovely extension to the garden.
The house is situated 3 minutes from Avalon Village. If you walk through the village, you will cross Barrenjoey Road which leads on to the golden sands of Avalon Beach. Because the house is so close to the beach, there is no need to find parking.
Avalon Village & Beach:
Avalon Village is packed with wonderful shops, restaurants, café's, Woolies, a gourmet butcher, and also the best bakery in Sydney, La Banette. You'll be dreaming about this bakery for many months after your stay! There is a cinema, yoga & pilates classes, medical centre, a choice of chemists. You'll find people walking their dogs, riding bikes and skateboards on the way to the skatepark, and others enjoying a quiet coffee sitting outdoors under umbrellas. Avalon Beach is fully patrolled during the summer months, a beach big enough for surfers and swimmers. There is also a 25m rock pool which is regularly used by locals.
