This original timber and sandstone fishermans cottage on the waters edge of beautiful Mackerel Beach in Pittwater, has been lovingly restored into a secluded beach and bush hideaway and couple's retreat.

Perfectly positioned, the Little Black Shacks North East aspect lets you wake to the sunrise over Palm Beach headland and enjoy the sun all day long. The sea breeze keeps the shack cool during summer whilst the tree-lined ridge of Ku-ring-gai National Park behind, shelters it from the cold Southerly winds during winter. With its rustic hand built sandstone open fireplace, comfy leather chairs, soft cowhide rugs and full-length window seat, the Little Black Shack is also a cosy winter cabin. There are 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom.

Just metres from the water, every room features windows and French or barn doors opening out to uninterrupted views of Mackerel Beach, Pittwater, Barrenjoey Headland, Palm Beach and beyond.

The Little Black Shack is completely eco friendly. Windows, barn doors and French doors allow the sea breeze to circulate and cool the house in summer while the open sandstone fireplace warms the house during winter using firewood collected from fallen trees off the property. Rainwater is harvested for bathing and washing which is recycled to irrigate the main garden. The grounds also feature a small kitchen garden to provide you with fresh herbs. When it comes to the interiors, if we couldn't find it second hand, we made it by hand, from recycled, repurposed and found materials. Candles and oil lanterns are provided for alternative lighting.

The Space

The interior features recycled and hand made furniture with an eclectic mix of nautical antiques and collectables gathered from travels around the world and forages along the beach.

The lounge, dining and gourmet chefs kitchen are open plan. The lounge features a hand built sandstone fireplace and a floor to ceiling bookcase with an extensive library. A large flat screen TV for Blue-ray DVDs no foxtel and the latest Bose surround sound Wi-Fi stereo are hidden behind the doors of a rustic handmade cupboard with Bose speakers in the outdoor areas and Bose Wi-Fi systems in each bedroom. The window seat spanning the full length of the front of the lounge room is the perfect spot to relax with a good book, chill out with your own playlist, take a nap or gaze out of any one of the 6 windows overlooking the stunning beaches and bay.

Once you are here you will never want to leave - which is why the gourmet chef’s kitchen comes equipped with everything you need and a fully stocked pantry. You are also welcome to help yourself to the fresh herbs in the kitchen garden.

Concrete bench tops, wooden cupboards made from the original floorboards, a large farmhouse sink, commercial grade cookware, microwave, Ilve gas stove and electric oven are perfect for creating your favourite meals. Two French doors open off the kitchen/dining area onto a small covered balcony and bar area overlooking the water.

The original sandstone bathroom features a beautiful stone bath and a large copper shower with amazing water views.

The main bedroom has a generous king bed and access to a private lawn and garden. The rustic hand made bed has loads of comfy down pillows and is elevated to take full advantage of the water views The bedding is 100 linen. The second bedroom is reached by a short set of sandstone steps in front of the house. This cosy room features a super comfortable hand made queen bed. The room is built from the original sandstone, lined with timber and has a soft cowhide rug on the floor. It also enjoys stunning panoramic water views through the window and barn door. It has its own private stone terrace overlooking the water and a grassed area shaded by a large Frangipani tree, with a hammock to relax in ... Both rooms are beautifully furnished with cowhide rugs, antique cupboards and chests of drawers.

There is a large north facing sun deck at the front of the shack and a covered terrace and outdoor hand-built sandstone kitchen. Featuring a wood fired oven and charcoal BBQ/fireplace this space is perfect for all day alfresco living, dining, cooking and entertaining.

There is an outdoor shower set amongst the trees half way down the front steps leading to a secluded sandy beach at low tide. Here you can rinse off after swimming or shower under the stars on warm summer evenings. The cottage is surrounded by native coastal gardens and terraced grass level areas overlooking the water and shaded by huge 70 year old Frangipani trees.

For the adventurous there are 2 kayaks, fishing rods and tackle, crab traps and snorkeling gear. There is also a beach umbrella supplied for shade. Relax in deck chairs or a hammock on the sun decks, terrace or shaded grass areas around the cottage. Dine and relax under the outdoor pergola on summer nights with meals prepared in the wood-fired oven or charcoal BBQ.

The surrounding National Park offers some incredible bush walks to secluded beaches, The Basin Lagoon, ancient Aboriginal carving sites and incredible lookouts. Or take a leisurely stroll along Mackerel Beach or through the valley behind it where you will find friendly locals including wallabies and bush turkeys and some original fibro beach cottages.

You can also hire your own tinny from Palm Beach to explore Pittwater's many coves and bays by water.

If you feel like heading back to the mainland, the old timber ferry, Myra, leaves on the hour and is just a 10-minute ride to Palm Beach wharf. From here you can make the trek up to Barrenjoey Lighthouse, walk to Palm Beach, dine at the local restaurants, bars and cafes or browse the shops, galleries and Palm Beach markets on set days. You can also head into Avalon village, just 5 minutes down the road by car. Here you can explore the many shops, restaurants and bars, visit the surf beach or take in a movie.

Unfortunately NO PETS allowed due to proximity of the shack to the national park.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Perfect Getaway! The Little Black Shack was everything we hoped it would be. It felt like we were on our own little island. Beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean with everything we needed. Highlights were the stunning views from every room, the local wildlife and nothing but the sounds of the waves. Loved the kayaking, fishing and outdoor pizza oven. All only 90 mins from the CBD. We will visit again very soon! x

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I think it is perfect. The Little Black Shack is surely an Australian's idea of paradise. Access, after arrival by ferry/water taxi, then a walk along the beach, is up a goat track (like a Greek Island!) with rainforest or a steep slope to the sea on one side and houses on the other. The house, although amongst other houses, feels like it is isolated and in the best position in the world. The sea is really just 'down there' from the lounge window seat, the breakfast and other deck/patios (there are a total of three), and the bed. The fantastic windows open right up to allow total uninterrupted air flow and views. Yes, it is spotlessly clean. Yes the bed is divine. Yes the knives and pans are great. The library of books and dvds was extensive. There are good cook books and the range of books was right for me at least. We had sunshine the whole of our stay. But had it been miserable weather, the fireplace looks very welcoming, and there is plenty of wood. The pizza oven works! Really well. Appropriate tools are there. The pantry provisions are more than adequate. But understandably, and as described, there are not the specialty things like anchovies. There is a very comprehensive spice range and a herb garden that includes everything I'd want I think. Kaffir lime, lemon grass, vietnamese mint, ordinary mint, parsley, corriander, basil, chillies, rosemary were all present. There is fishing gear, but my husband preferred his own. We are older people and didn't trust ourselves to get the kayaks back to the storage location, but they were there and looked very temping - vests were hanging on a hook too. There are quality speakers throughout - in the bedroom (very nice - a hard choice between music and waves!), the pizza area and of course the lounge area. Perfect, comfortable chairs to sit in, at the table and in the lounge. The breakfast deck is perfect. All the outdoor areas are perfect! There is a small but inviting desk in the bedroom. Nice, but the rising sun affects the screen of your laptop. What a problem to have! Decor is eclectic and interesting. We moved some aside, eg from the desk, as required - and put it back of course. In May sunshine streamed into the house and the decks for most of the day. The orientation of the house is wonderful for sunlight. Outside, the pizza area is a shaded shelter area with a big table for fun meals. There is a sun umbrella too, to take to the beach or one of the terraced grassy areas. Sunrises are totally visible from the whole of the house (including the bedroom), as is the Barrenjoey lighthouse. Changes in Pittwater are continuous and fascinating to watch. On the weekend in particular, boating activity on Pittwater is beautiful to watch. There is fresh water. But responsible use means that the very inviting large hip bath is a definite luxury. And while collection of clean dishwater and tea leaves is good environmentally, I found the worry of that hooked into my own past experiences with severe drought and the emotion of that. But Jamie and Ingrid will not let you run out of water! Mosquitoes are a pest, but the supply of repellents is exceedingly adequate and generous. They are only a pest if you leave the windows right open. Mackerel Beach is beautiful for swimming and walking. The forest is diverse and interesting - great for walks. The ferry arrives on the hour to the public wharf - a romantic picture to watch from the house, or the wharf. We went 'to the mainland' one day to collect my husband's fishing rod from our car. Had an acceptable lunch almost across the road from the ferry at Barrenjoey House. Then bought up more good cheese, anchovies, fresh vegies and other treats from Palm Beach wine co further down the road in the Newport direction - an easy walk. On the Pittwater side of Barrenjoey Road. Jamie and Ingrid were very thoughtful and considerate hosts. I think they had thought of absolutely everything for a wonderful holiday, but if not I am sure they'd provide it if asked. They were (in airbnb parlance) perfect hosts. Jamie said we wouldn't want to leave, and he was right. We didn't ever want to leave. The Little Black Shack is an expensive holiday option (we stayed for a week). But is unique, wonderful and very special.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like nothing else! The Little Black Shack is amazing! It's totally unique in every way. The love and attention to detail that has been poured into this property is evident everywhere. Considering for the environment, location and heritage of the shack along with its laid back luxury made it an amazing experience. We will be back and rave about this property to anyone who will listen. Thank you so much.
