The Discovery Coast

The 'Baffle" is one of the few remaining 'wild' creek basins in Queensland; in other words there is no restriction of the creek from source to mouth and fish and crabs are free to move throughout the system. This also encourages a wide selection of native birds, brahminy kites and kingfishers being a common sight, with the occasional visits from the black swans or jabirus. With little intense agriculture or industry taking place in the basin, it really is a pristine environment.

Access to Agnes Water via Roundhill and Deepwater National parks is a beautiful drive (four wheel drive only). Allow a day for this at least. Rules beach is also 30 minutes away, if you want to do some shore fishing. The Town of 1770 where Captain Cook landed,(giving meaning to the 'discovery coast') is just around the corner from Agnes. The location of these two towns is unique in that they are far enough south to avoid the tropical stingers, far enough north for the water to be warm for swimming, and have reasonable surf before the interruption of the Great Barrier Reef. Lady Musgrave Island is also serviced from 1770, on a daily trip.

Hello Dean,

My email addy doesn' validate,

Is below, cheers Gaz.

Had a fantastic stay at “Paringa” (Home on the creek). Cabin is simple and comfortable, we stayed in winter and were warm and cozy at night. The cabin has a small motel style fridge which we complemented with our own Waeco.

Dean is a wonderful host, who actively encourages you to explore the property. Cattle are super relaxed (even the bulls) so no problem wandering around 170 hectares of grazing, creek and wetlands. Easy access to the Baffle Creek at the property, a boat is a good idea to explore fishing on the estuary.

A few images are here, the gallery includes a fly over the property and Baffle Creek to Rules beach::

Coming from the south Rosedale is the last opportunity for a good coffee at The Little Teahouse.

Baffle Creek village (20 mins drive) is a friendly place and has fuel, groceries, bait and hardware, bottle shop, pub (Zincalumbar) with locally brewed beers.

Rules Beach, empty with and an opportunity for surf casting/beach fishing.

Nice drive to Agnes Water and 1770 if you need a tourist stop, otherwise we found the cabin and Baffle Creek area offered everything we needed for a relaxing, QUIET and inspiring stay.

Be aware of the sandflies down on the creek - Garry provided ample fodder for them.

Telstra 3G coverage good at the property.

Bring your binoculars and bird books as it is a fantastic opportunity for bird Watching and twitching

On the property we saw::

Blue Faced Honeyeater

Little (Brush) Wattlebird

A pair of Jabiru (Black Necked Stork) (what do they come south for winter??)

A pair of Brolgas

Eastern Great Egret

Cattle Egret

White faced heron

Brahimy Kite

Wedge Tail Eagle

Sea Eagle

Perrigine Falcon

Grey Fantail

Willy Wagtail

Further afield on the estuary:

Mangrove Robin

Little Kingfisher

Thanks Dean for a lovely stay.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great place!!!! Rob and I really enjoyed our stay at paringa, getting away from the hustle and bustle of brissy we found a little peice of paradise, if you want silence and serenity, take a breath and put your feet up this is the place. On the other side if you want to do a bit of fishing baffle creek is is right on your doorstep all you need is a boat or kayak or just have a dip.Rules beach about 20mins away where there is nothing between you and the ocean. If you like a bit of bird watching or watching nature at its best,we were down at the creek and one night actually seen fire flies never seen them before in my life!! Oh and another little thing I forgot to mention was the owner of Paringa, Dean you were an absolute treat, the hospitality and generousity you showed rob and me was outstanding, above and beyond your call of duty to us, quite an exceptional man, we really appreciated meeting someone who did really care whether we were comfortable and set out to do what we wanted, that was to go home with a smile on our faces. thanks so much Dean and looking forward to another great stay at chrissy.hopefully, kindest regards Julie and Rob,xx.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Country Feel. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the laid back weekend we had at the cabin. The cabin would suit a couple or small family. The cabin isn't large in scale but suitable for a hot shower and a place to make something up for dinner. It has a queen bed and two single bunks, small dining room table and a small fridge. It’s clean, tidy and basic. Perfect for a quiet weekend away, the only noise you will have comes from the local wildlife. Sitting on the balcony sipping a wine listen to the birds chirping is an amazing experience. A general store, servo and bottlo are nearby, about 20 mins drive. They have bait, ice, fuel etc. The fishing grounds are very close by. I would suggest a small tinnie or kayak to explore baffle creek and launching it at the property would be trouble free. Baffle Creek is home to some rather large Mangrove jack so the keen fisho will love this place. Bring the crab pots as large muddies can also be found. The cattle property is run by a guy named Dean and his Caretaker, both are extremely friendly and a wealth of knowledge on the area. On arrival we were presented with a bottle of champagne and a quick rundown of the property. Dean is very passionate about the environment and the pristine conditions he offers show that. Not one piece of rubbish on the whole property and he wants to keep it that way. If you want to have a fire and a cold beverage you can, you can also use many of the hotplates available to cook a feed. We had enough fire wood on arrival, already cut witch was nice. Dean's designated camping / cooking area is lovely and it overlooks baffle creek. The cabin overlooks a small dam and acres of grassy paddocks with cattle in the background. It's very picturesque. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to unwind. Read a book, catch a fish, run some crab pots, take bush-walks and generally just relax. It’s all about the outdoors and enjoying what it offers. Ryan & Kirsten.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect private getaway Fantastic place to stay! Dean is an awesome host and really makes you feel welcome! We got to feed calves caught great fish in the creek and had a relaxing 4 nights. The creek camping area is just amazing! Best outdoor dunny I've ever used. Huge BBQ that could cater for a small army.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quiet, peaceful getaway Cabin was smaller than expected and although basic was well fitted out and comfortable. Host and caretaker were very welcoming, helpful and full of local information. The picnic by the water in late afternoon more than compensated for 'no fish' with the arrival of black swans paddling by.
