3 acres of private rainforest on Cairns most beautiful avenue
This is a very special property - less than 10 minutes from the Cairns CBD you enter the driveway into private world of tall rainforest trees and small hidden gardens on the slopes of the Whitfield Range. The Lodge sits at the top of the property with a sea view. It was part of an historic property known as Arcadia. The original 1904 house, belonging to Henry MacDonnell, is next door and is the oldest house in Edge Hill. Henry was a pioneer. As well as starting a law firm that still exists today, he built the first private swimming pool in Cairns. Part of it can still be seen on the hillside steps down to the rainforest garden.
Collins Avenue runs for about a kilometre from the Lodge entrance to Edge Hill fiveways passing the Tanks Arts Centre and The Flecker Botanic Gardens. It is a beautiful walk under huge fern-draped Raintrees with beautifully tended ginger and lily gardens under the pleated palm fronds of the native Fan Palm.
There are regular concerts and other happenings at The Tanks. A little further along is the almost new and award winning mirrored Botanic Garden Centre. A great place for breakfast and finding an interesting gift.
The main Botanic Gardens are next. Don't leave Cairns without spending at least an hour here. The gardens are wonderful and I defy anyone to go here without taking lots of pictures. There is another great cafe here so stop and have lunch. There are guided walks every morning and once a month during the dry season there is an outdoor film night.
Past the gardens you enter the village hub of Edge Hill. Lots of coffee places and restaurants around the fiveways - it is a very popular meeting place.
