About Port Douglas

In Port Douglas you can watch spectacular sunrises on Four Mile Beach or explore the local Rainforest.
Set off on an adventure by exploring the coast or the Great Barrier Reef. A tropical, laid-back atmosphere surrounded by greenery makes the charm of Port Douglas.

Port Douglas: Between World Heritage Wonders

Port Douglas visitors have the chance to tick two World Heritage Sites off their bucket list. One day, go snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef. The next, look for wildlife hidden in the canopy of the Daintree Forest. If you’re staying in town for longer than a quick break, you could even get your divers’ certification and discover the reef at a slower pace.

With such household name attractions so close to the main street, you might be hard-pressed to fit them all in, but if you take a day off to unwind in town, you will also discover numerous shopping outlets, restaurants serving fresh seafood and a variety of sports centres and facilities to keep you fit.

For their Port Douglas holidays, travellers can choose from stylish waterfront villas, self-contained apartments steps from the shops and secluded hinterland homes.

A Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

Port Douglas is an important launching point for cruises setting off for the Great Barrier Reef. There are a number of ways to explore this World Heritage Site, with options for all time and budget constraints.

Many travellers hire snorkelling or scuba diving gear and hop on a boat for a half-day or day-long excursion amidst some of the world’s most colourful coral.

As you peer beneath the water’s surface, keep your eyes peeled for sea turtles, schools of tropical fish and many other aquatic creatures. If you have more time to spare, book an overnight cruise, where night diving is a highlight. Some visitors stay in Port Douglas for longer to get their own diving certifications and become qualified instructors.

To take in the Great Barrier Reef without getting in the water, you can also organise a helicopter tour over the expansive coral formations.

Walk Under the Oldest Trees on the Planet

If you would like to explore the hinterland, head to the Daintree Forest, home to century-old trees. Get your daily exercise as you meander through the forest on walking trails. Take some time to observe the numerous bird species and other animals that live in the rainforest.

Maybe hiking isn’t your thing - in this case, you can join a 4x4 tour. Bring your own vehicle or participate in a guided excursion through the rainforest. Tour operators will share a wealth of knowledge, allowing visitors to learn more about the ecosystem surrounding them.

Meanwhile, adrenaline junkies of all ages can go zip lining to discover the forest at canopy level. Just a short drive from Port Douglas, the Daintree Forest is optimally located for day trips.

Port Douglas Beaches and Sports

Port Douglas is lined by Four Mile Beach, an expansive stretch of sand fronting the Coral Sea. The foreshore is family-friendly and there is a designated safe swimming area.

Four Mile Beach is also a hub for water sport enthusiasts. Join in some of the activities or sit back and watch the sailboats go by. While you’re at it, look into horse riding tours along the beach.

Beyond the foreshore, you will find a number of golf courses with holes for golfers of all skill levels. Port Douglas also features a three-court tennis club, just a short walk from the main street.

Shopping and Dining in Port Douglas

One day, take a break from the action and unwind in town, where Port Douglas’ array of shopping and dining venues await. Restaurants line the waterfront, so you can soak up some of that ocean atmosphere. Make sure to try freshly caught seafood.

To indulge in a little - or a lot of - retail therapy, head to Port Douglas’ two shopping centres, Portico and Port Village, or take a stroll down Macrossan Street, where high end brands meet smaller boutiques. If you’re more of an art enthusiast, browse or buy local pieces at one of Port Douglas’ galleries.

Getting to Port Douglas

The holiday hub of Port Douglas is accessible from all major Australian cities and many international destinations. The simplest way is to land at Cairns Airport, just over an hour’s drive from Port Douglas, and undertake the rest of the journey by coach or rental car.
