Magnetic Island: The Pull of NatureMagnetic Island, just 8 km off the shore from Townsville, has seen human beings drawn to it for centuries. Prior to European arrival, Yunbenun, as it was traditionally called, was a significant site for indigenous Australians. As of the 19th century, the island’s Picnic Bay became a popular holiday destination for mainlanders.A gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, snorkelling and diving tours depart Magnetic Island. There are many opportunities to swim, sail and fish off the beach and rocks. Inland, the national park acts as a haven for various animal species, from koalas to many different birds.Holiday rentals are scattered around Magnetic Island, ranging from bungalows to family villas.Walking, Hiking and Wildlife SpottingMagnetic Island National Park covers just over half the island and is laced with walking trails. Among these, Forts Walk stands out for nature lovers. Wander along the eucalyptus-lined path for the chance to see koalas in the wild. In fact, the park is home to one of the largest koala colonies in Australia. At its heart, Mt Cook towers over the national park, with trails leading up to scenic lookouts for sweeping coastal views. There are roughly 25 km of walking trails on the island, with many opportunities to spot possums, rock wallabies and a variety of bird species. For a more in-depth look at the island’s flora, fauna and natural attractions, join a group tour. Bus tours are also available for those who’d rather take it easy.Fishing and Water SportsAs you would expect of an island, Maggie, as the locals call it, offers a wide array of opportunities to fish or partake in water sports. Fishermen can try their luck off the beach, rocks or even along inland waterways. Mingle with local fishermen at the Picnic Bay Jetty or hire a charter a go deep sea fishing for the day. Various scuba diving and snorkelling cruises also depart Magnetic Island, taking you out to the Great Barrier Reef. During your holiday, sign up for some diving or snorkelling lessons. Alternately, go on a jet ski or sea kayak tour of the island or rent a sailboat and relax in a sheltered bay. Operators around the island rent out all the gear you need.Magnetic Island’s Beaches and BaysMagnetic Island offers 23 beaches and bays to choose from. Picnic Bay is perhaps the most well known, with a jetty and safe swimming area. Rising up behind the beach is a lookout, providing views all the way to Townsville. This is a popular place for local families to picnic. Horseshoe Bay is another swimming beach on the island, reputedly without stingers. If you’re looking for some peace and quiet away from most other human beings, head to Nelly Bay, south of the ferry terminal. Alma Bay’s beach is set across from the weekly market and Florence Bay, lined by trees, offers plenty of shaded space to set down your towel. Travellers can also choose to stroll amidst the boulders at Radical Bay Beach or Arthur Bay. History and Culture on Magnetic IslandA seasonal home to Aboriginal People for hundreds of years, you may run into middens or cave drawings as you discover Magnetic Island and its bays. The island was also a key observation and defence site during World War II, as Townsville was a military base. You can still see a guard station and observation tower today. To delve deeper into local history, visit the Magnetic Island History and Craft Centre, located within an old school house. There are permanent and changing exhibits, telling the story of the island’s first inhabitants all the way to that of the 2000+ permanent residents today. While you’re here, purchase locally designed arts and crafts. The Villages of Magnetic IslandMagnetic Island has four main villages. Picnic Bay is home to an outdoor mall, just steps from the beach and foreshore with a playground. Satisfy your appetite for international cuisine, as a variety of offerings await, from Thai to Modern Australian. Picnic Bay’s golf close welcomes visitors and is said to be where Greg Norman got his start in the sport. The next town over, Arcadia, features heritage mansions and WWII commemorative buildings. Magnetic Island is a hotspot for yogis, and there are many studios where you can take a class during your holiday. When it comes to evening entertainment, Magnetic Island’s villages host festivals and events throughout the year, such as the Great Barrier Reef Film Festival. Getting to Magnetic IslandPublic ferries connect the island with Townsville. If you’re travelling with your car, there is also the possibility of using a different service to bring your vehicle across. There are direct flights to Townsville from Brisbane, Sydney and even parts of Southeast Asia.
