Dunwich is situated on beautiful North Stradbroke Island, convenient to beaches and boat ramps. The water taxi from the mainland is a short walking distance from the house, as are shops, an art gallery, and the local museum. Straddie, as the locals call it, is a relaxing fishing and beach destination, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
We can arrange personalised boating expeditions for your stay. Email us to discuss options for offshore fishing trips, whale watching, Moreton Bay crabbing and fishing, snorkelling at Tangalooma resort, an island picnic on Peel Island, or whatever else takes your fancy.
Normally we rent out only the bottom floor of our two-story house, but for the Christmas holidays we are renting the entire house for week-long stays. The upstairs features a large, airy open-plan living space with polished wooden floors and a fully equipped kitchen. There is a very large master bedroom with queen sized bed and a smaller bedroom with a king single bed. The space has the capacity to sleep up to an additional 3 people, on a king single daybed, a pull out futon bed, and even a single mattress!
Downstairs is another large open plan room, with a queen sized bed and a fold out double bed couch.
The upstairs deck overlooks beautiful Moreton Bay and the southern Bay Islands, and is a wonderful spot to relax after your day at the beach.
Dunwich is a working class town situated on the bay side of North Stradbroke Island. The barge and water taxis all dock in Dunwich. It is a short 20 minute trip by bus or car to nearby Point Lookout and Amity Point, on the ocean side of the island, where you can enjoy surf beaches and an array of dining options. Dunwich itself has quiet bayside beaches, perfect for exploring the sand flats at low tide or swimming at high tide. Attractions in Dunwich include native wildlife (kangaroos and koalas can be seen along the shoreline and in parks), a museum with an extensive exhibit on Straddie's interesting historical past, and an indigenous art gallery, with lovely locally-made art for sale. Dunwich is a great place to take in the evening sunset from the water's edge over a cool drink.
For complete freedom, email us and ask about including a car in your booking. Alternatively, we are conveniently located a short walk from the ferry terminals and also a public bus stop.
Please note that the last passenger ferry to the island leaves Cleveland at 7:25 PM, so make sure you can get to Cleveland prior to that. If you are coming by public transport, the free bus service from the train station does not meet the last ferry of the day. Check the Stradbroke Ferries website for both passenger and vehicle ferry timetables, or the Stradbroke Flyer website for passenger ferries only. Restaurants have limited opening hours, and there is not much open on Monday and Tuesday, so please plan in advance!
