Caloundra: Fast-Paced Beach Breaks

Caloundra, a resort town on Queensland’s famous Sunshine Coast, is known for its miles of beaches, high adrenaline activities and family-friendly options.

Most of your break will likely unfold near the water, whether by swimming, jet-skiing or even skydiving over the beach. Even the town’s expansive markets take place just steps from the esplanade. Beyond the beach, golf courses, spas and the famous Australia Zoo await.

Holiday rentals in Caloundra include sunny villas, spacious beach houses and modern apartments.

Caloundra’s Beach Scene

Patrolled Kings Beach, right in town, is a favourite spot for swimming. Lining the beach is a grassy area with playground equipment and picnic areas. If you’d rather not swim in the ocean, opt for some laps in the saltwater pool.

If you’re travelling with the family pet, head to dog-friendly Shelly Beach, which stretches as far as the eye can see. Rock pools line this part of the coast, visible at low tide. Golden Beach, meanwhile is a hub for water sport enthusiasts, with safe areas for swimming. Try some windsurfing or paddle boarding, or cast a line off the sand and reel in some flathead.

Caloundra and the Sunshine Coast for Families

The Sunshine Coast boasts a variety of attractions for kids of all ages. Introduce older children to an important aspect of Australian history at the Queensland Aviation Museum. Highlights include stepping inside a cockpit and walking amidst planes ranging from military to executive jets.

A short drive from Caloundra, Australia Zoo is one of the largest, best known wildlife reserves in the country, with over 1200 animal species. The zoo is heavily involved in conservation efforts. Book a guided golf cart tour, feed iconic Australian species or get your photo taken holding cuddly koalas - or even reptiles if you dare!

Back in Caloundra, you have access to 10+ playgrounds. In addition to classic climbing equipment, Pioneer Park has some more unique offerings; notably a three-person slide, a hammock and a herb garden. The playground at Bells Beach has won local awards, featuring an area just for toddlers.

Thrills and Chills in Caloundra

Stay active in Caloundra as you get your adrenaline pumping. Not for the faint of heart, Sunshine Coast Skydivers organise jumps from either 7,000 or 15,000 feet. Before you land on the beach, you will be able to take in views over the coast, Bribie Island, Moreton Island and the Glasshouse Mountains. The operator also offers skydiving lessons.

For even more thrills, sign up for a helicopter tour over the Sunshine Coast. Travellers can choose from scenic joy rides and photography flights, as well as dining experiences up in the sky. Back at sea level, get a different view of the Sunshine Coast as you zoom past at 30 km an hour on a jet-ski, accompanied by a guide.

Caloundra: In Town

In town, visitors have access to many activities and amenities. Golfers may head straight to the 18-hole course. The Caloundra Golf Club is set amidst lush native vegetation. As you play, keep an eye out for the resident lorikeets.

If golf isn’t your idea of relaxing, book a massage or other treatment at one of the spas. Caloundra is known for its health and wellness focus. Stroll along Bulcock Street and take your pick of spas and skincare clinics.

Each Sunday morning, the Caloundra Street Fair takes over the CBD. Browse 200+ stalls, where locals are selling clothes, handmade goods, fresh food and coffee. On Fridays throughout December January, the Twilight Markets take place: shop for unique gifts as you watch the sun set over the ocean.

Getting to Caloundra
