A magical garden setting to enjoy. Have a special romantic picnic in the gardens.

The garden is inspired by our efforts to create a special sequestered world behind the hedges - a fusion of shape, colour, structure and materials- a place for the senses

Hearing- twittering birds, busy buzzing bees, the burbling water in our ponds and the rustle of leaves and branches in the wind

Smell- fragrant plants, aromatic herbs, freshly cut lawn

Touch- smooth, rough and bristly leaves, sun warmed stone and terraces, coolness of shady trees

Taste-the herb garden, vegetables amongst flowers and fresh fruit from the orchard areas

Buildings are visually linked to the environment and are inseparable partners. The architectural style incorporates form and texture, and this is repeated in the garden with striking contrasting shapes and leaf formations created by a variety of trees and conifers. The original subdivision was purchased in England in 1847. The irregular shaped and sloping land provides the opportunity to express individuality within the bounds of the surrounding historic hedging of Hawthorn, Holly and Laurustinus. Originally part of the Derrymor estate, it is believed that in the late 1880s Mr Walter Hawker established the garden in typical Victorian style, with large European trees, including the stand of elms now dominant within the Thorngrove garden. When purchasing the land in 1984, taming of the hedge was a priority so as to preserve the integrity of the historic streetscape. The property name is derived from the masses of blackberry plants found growing under the trees, the thorny hedge and the grove of elms. Both the Victorians and the Edwardians turned fencing, gates and hedging into a fine art. Although an informal garden, formality is created by patterned layouts of cloud clipped conifers and English Box hedging, the imposing wrought iron gates and stone pillars atop with bronze winged griffin lamps. Topiary, including life size creatures have been created in areas throughout the garden.

The garden framework was dictated by an existing driveway that divided the land, established tree plantings, the outcrop of exposed rock on the east and the sloping contours of the site on the west. The garden is divided into special areas and sections defined by paths and hedging designed to arouse curiosity. The large trees and delineated sections provide micro-climates. Lily of the Valley flower well under the elms and Cinerarias, Cyclamens, Cliveas, Primrose and Polyanthus continue to flower there well into the summer months, most remaining in flower throughout the year. Despite challenges such little topsoil and masses of tree roots , the addition of straw from our animals has composted and enriched the soil. A water recycling plant and underground tanks ensures levels of moisture are maintained for the plants.

The garden is in a constant state of change, the awakening of Spring with a carpet of Bluebells, Daffodils, Tulips and Red Hot Pokers and Hellebores. Oyster Plants provide texture and height as a backdrop under the trees. Foxgloves, Canterbury Bells and Marigolds in contrasting and exuberant colours are planted for late Spring and Summer displays. In winter the static ornamental shapes of the conifers and the sparseness of the landscape are encircled by swirling mists. Autumn tones are provided by the elms, the Japanese Maples, Pin Oaks and a Manchurian Pear No plants are excluded from the garden with the most treasured plantings becoming “memory” trees and shrubs from friends, neighbours and relatives that are no longer with us. These plants continue to thrive and provide a constant reminder of special people and special times. Our hens have a special place both in the garden and in our lives. These happy chickens sleep in the castle walls, well protected in the ramparts.
