Description

River Cottage is a newly renovated lovely 1847 character cottage with stunning waterfront access and views right in the serene heart of Old Noarlunga township.

Its 8 beautiful stained glass windows accentuate its turn of the century appeal. It enjoys original Oak floorboards, Spanish tiles and lofty raked ceilings. It contains brand new furniture, appliances and fixtures, including reverse cycle airconditioning. and gas log fire in the lounge overlooking the river.

The bathroom is large with dual vanities, a shower, bath and washing machine. The kitchen is new, with timber benchtops and new appliances.

River cottage includes 3 bedrooms, a dining room, a lounge room, a rear deck and a double car garage with electric roller door security.

River Cottage is a secure, with modern feel, yet a charming escape where life is lived at the pace of a lazy river. Enjoy the dappled colours through the beautiful leadlight windows.

Enjoy superb river views from the loungeroom and kitchen, or step out onto the large rear deck and watch the river and birdlife up close. Go down to the river flat and fish for freshwater or saltwater fish as the river is tidal. Need more accommodation for an extended family or guests or a special occasion ? Book both the River Cottage and the 1847 Granary, and unlock the double connecting doors

Guest access

Secure vehicle offstreet parking is provided for 2 cars and access to River Cottage through the electronic roller door in the double garage. Use of provided Bicycles, provided Canoes and waterside activities are at own risk.

Hosts reside offsite, nearby, and can usually be there on arrival if required , or only a call away with lots of advice and tourism tips if needed.

The neighborhood

The highlights of River Cottage is the realization that in 1847 early settlers deliberately placed it and The Granary next door on the best elevated riverfront position in the town, which meant that when the river rose 9 feet in 2016 and inundated the town, River Cottage and the Granary remained safe and sound.

The river flat it owns, was the slipway for Horse-drawn River Trading Barges Maid of the Mill and The Onkaparinga. Its central placement in the town means it is an easy walk or paddle to all amenities including Market Square.

Follow the river around the town. Visit the main street shops, visit the pub for a meal or live music, Bring your tennis shoes or football/ cricket gear and walk to nearby sporting grounds for tennis, cricket or football.

On entering the township, and within walking distance, are a variety of fast food options and a 24 hour service station. New Electric Trains to the city are a short walk away. Superior sandy beaches are a few minutes away by car, as are the wineries of McLaren Vale and Willunga.

Bring your camera as there are lots of photo opportunities on your stay Upstream,the Onkaparinga River river wraps right around the town , becoming a Bream nursery before disappearing into the Onkaparinga National Park with its walking and bicycling paths.

John Wrathall Bull was the pioneer explorer who opened up the area right back to Bull Creek at Strathalbyn. He is the great great great grandfather of the current owners of River Cottage and The Granary. Parliament paid him an ex gratia payment for designing the Ridleys Stripper Grain Harvesters that were used to fill the Mill and Granary with grain.

Bushels of grain were shipped in horse drawn river trading barges down river to Port Noarlunga, returning with the tide, loaded with steel, window glass, nails, roof tiles, Amgoorie and Pauchong Tea, Agar Sugar, Lyons Coffee and liquor.

River Cottage and The Granary form a unique listed building which is a vital part of South Australia's earliest maritime and transport history.

Getting around

New Southern Expressway allows 35 minute access to the city, or do the day trip circuit south to McLaren Vale, Willunga, Mount Compass, Goolwa, Middleton, Port Elliott, Victor Harbour and return. Buses to the city loop through the town both clockwise and anti clockwise. Experience the new electric train trip over the Onkaparinga River wetlands, to the city along the coast and return.

Easy transport is acheived with the new expressway, new electric trains and frequent buses,

The river contains excellent fishing and is an excellent day's paddle by canoe to the sea. Nearby walking and bike riding trails wind through the national parks either side of the town.

Other things to note

Old Noarlunga is a quiet Village, where the pace of life is layback and relaxing . be sure to walk down to the Hotel in the main street for a great smorgasboard. Tuesday and Wednesday nights are epic schnitzel nights. Football oval, tennis courts, playgrounds, netball courts and cricket nets all within walking distance. There is a 3 person canadian canoe, and a pair of bicycles provided for your enjoyment. Please ensure they are left secured and that the lifejackets and helmets are put back when you are finished. If you are cleaning fish, please do it down on the river flat.

River Cottage 1847 has been renovated with love and care over a period of 2 years as a wonderful partner or alternative to The Granary 1847 which is also listed on stayz. River Cottage is themed slightly more modern than the Granary 1847, but has accommodation for 5 comfortably. There are queen beds in bedroom 1 and 2 with a King single in bedroom 3.

Your co-host is David who was born and raised in Adelaide with an excellent knowledge of South Australia. We love water activities and caravanning. As a result, our local knowledge is excellent.

We lived in the Granary from 2008 to 2016, upgraded its grounds and love it, with plans to retire back there one day We now live close by. Far enough away to give you privacy, yet close enough to be supportive if you want it. Our motto is "Life is what happens to you when you are busy making other plans". We hope you love River Cottage on the Onkaparinga River Waterfront, and the quaint little town as much as we do.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quaint and quirky Lovely girls weekend away! Plenty of space for the 7 of us. Clean and with everything you need! Live views from the deck! Only small request would be some thicker curtains in the bedrooms- no kids-so a lie in would have been great but up with the sparrows!
