Rated 5 out of 5 by from Charming Cottage 'Ballantrae' is one of the most charming cottages we have ever stayed in. Beautifully presented, with a lovely outdoor area and cottage garden - ideal for sitting out, with a good book and a glass of wine. We very much look forward to our next visit! Margaret & Peter

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Charming cottage, nice winter warmer I stayed here with my parents (mum in a wheelchair), husband and toddler. Great place for a family or group stay, and it's easy to walk to central Goolwa from the cottage. If you like the atmosphere of a bygone era, you will love this place. The cottage is nicely furnished and comfortable, and the wood-fire in the lounge room is perfect on a winter's evening. The room became a bit too smoky at one point, not sure if this was the technique of the fire-stokers or the type of wood ;-) The cottage does get cold at night (in winter) so definitely get that fire roaring! We spent family time in front of the log fire, and also at the kitchen table to play cards. The kitchen was easy to keep warm as there are a couple of electric bar heaters on hand. Beds very comfortable and warm. Kitchen is very well-equipped and we loved the breakfast, really glad I ordered it, very generous serves and yummy food (and my husband was so relieved to see the breakfast included Lavazza coffee, while my dad was happy with the Moccona!). There are also two stove-top espresso makers/coffee pots provided for coffee lovers. **For wheelchair users: The house was easy to access from the garage and gate at the back. Due to my mum's mobility issues, it was easier for her to sleep in the back bedroom closest to the bathroom (she can walk short distances with a stick). She was not able to manoeuvre her wheelchair from the kitchen into the bedroom and bathroom, so she used her walking stick for this part of the house. The shower is large and includes handrails. The basin is close to the toilet and can be used as a support to get up from toilet.** The outdoor entertaining area looks delightful, would be great spot for lunch and a glass of wine in summer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Recommended for a special holiday This was a really special. Our family stayed for two nights for our hard-fought, mid-year holiday, and it more than lived up to our expectations. Ballantrae is a gorgeous half-house dating back to 1862, lovingly restored and really well equipped. It is all quite compact, but we found it a real home-from-home experience, and a lovely step back in time. The wood fire made it especially cosy during our winter stay. Everything is there, so don't make the mistake of bringing any kitchen things. We'll definitely be coming back again.
