Description

Visit our MIDDLETON OLD SCHOOL HOUSE FACEBOOK PAGE. We welcome great conversation/photos and love to see our guests enjoying their stay.

This unique property is very different to what is being offered in the area as it has local historical value to the Fleurieu Peninsula.

It was the first school to be built on the South Coast giving this little b&b, bed and breakfast, cottage an excellent alternative as a great holiday. Soak up the atmosphere of Middleton's heritage The School House sits in an attractive garden setting giving you lots of opportunities for reading and relaxing with the option of beach or country walks.

The Original School House was built in 1869. It is extensively renovated and rebuilt to add all the needs of a modern home away from home. Relax, revive and rejuvenate in a peaceful location surrounded by wonderful gardens.

When you arrive you will note 1869 carved into the Lintel above the original door. By 1871 there were 52 students attending class here. The Schoolmaster's residence was built next door first. As the Headmaster owned the school it was a 'vested school'. He conducted lessons paid by the Government of the day and his pay was based on the number of students attending.

Have a relaxing or romantic getaway and capture all the local character of a wonderfully historic area.

Romantic Getaways are always great and our cottage is ideally designed for 2.

Self-catering with a fully equipped kitchen or dine out at the numerous restaurants, cafes and wineries in the area.

We are dog friendly, for small dogs up to 10 kilos. There is an area that is secured and fenced so you can go out and enjoy your day. Please note you will still need to take responsibility of your pet.

Within walking distance you'll find:

Middleton General Store & Caltex Petrol

Millhouse Medical Centre

Middleton Tavern

The Pie & Coffee Bakery

Fortuna Gallery

Many guests like the option of going out for breakfast. If you would like breakfast provisions supplied, please let us know at the time of booking. Breakfast provisions will be chargeable.

When you consider what a hotel, or hotels charge for their holiday destinations Middleton Old School House can provide that alternative. Take the weekend, or the whole week, to relax. This holiday home will be sure to suit your needs. Holiday houses make a great place to enjoy some time to revive.

Middleton has been famous for years as the "Chill Out" capital of SA, great surf, wonderful beaches and coastal views. It's a perfect spot for not only surfers, but fisherman as well. It's a short 6-minute stroll to the beach from the cottage.

Middleton is also known for whale watching with the Southern Right Whale appearing between June through to September. It's not uncommon for them to still be around in October. One year we had 11 whales in Bashams Beach only 100 meters off shore.

The beach is perfect for kite flying, surf lessons, swimming, long walks along the white sand or around the rocks. If you're extremely energetic go for a run Encounter Pathway is a shared zone for walkers and keen bike riders and runs between Middleton and Victor Harbor.

Middleton's town name is believed to have come from 'Middle - Town' as it is between Port Elliott and Goolwa. The railway line opened in 1854 which went between these two towns with Middleton in-between. The track was extended the same year the Middleton Old School House was built - 1869.

Port Elliot is a model seaside village only 4 km away with great shopping, wonderful cafes like the Flying Fish Restaurant, Cockles on North, The Port Elliot Pub, just to name a few. Nothing to wear...not to worry, there are great boutiques that you can browse. Take a walk along The Strand, stroll the paths towards Victor Harbor and find the most sensational secluded little coves. Sit on the rocks and watch the amazing waves come in, it's absolutely magical

Horseshoe Bay became a port in 1851 with Port Elliott becoming a settlement in 1852. Goods and passengers were carried on the 'first public railway' described. Horseshoe Bay is a large bay providing safe swimming conditions for children.

Victor Harbor has magnificent early colonial architecture, good pubs, cafes and restaurants. You can visit the Whale Centre, climb aboard the Steam Ranger or Cockle Train. There's the Horse Drawn Carriage over to Granite Island where you'll find Penguins and the entire experience will keep the children entertained for the whole day.

Goolwa is in the opposite direction from Victor Harbor and stands at the mouth of the Murray River on Lake Alexandrina. Every type of water sport is available in Goolwa. Hindmarsh Island and the Coorong are a few km's away. The Murray Mouth is renowned for its fishing, so if you are a keen 'fisherperson' that's where you should head. The first part of Goolwa was surveyed in 1840, while the introduction of the Paddle Steamers to the river was in 1853.

If you happen to enjoy Golf, why not try these courses:

Fleurieu Golf Course Mount Compass

McCracken Country Club Victor Harbor

Victor Harbor Golf Club Victor Harbor

South Lakes Golf Club Goolwa

Strathalbyn is a pretty town with numerous studio galleries. High Street has a host of shops and halls displaying Collectors’ Items, Antiques, Craft and Memorabilia. Share a picnic with the ducks in the Soldier's Memorial Gardens beside the tranquil Angas River or walk through some of the narrow lanes, admiring the architecture and gardens.

At the end of the day you can come back to Middleton Old School House and enjoy the serenity, peace and quiet around you. If you open the Cape Cod windows in the romantic bedroom in the loft the sounds of the ocean will gently relax you into a deep slumber.

McLAREN VALE WINE REGION is a favourite with everyone having over 60 cellar doors and only 20 minutes from our cottage. The regions warm climate helps produce great Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Viognier, Marsanne, Rousanne, Barbera and Sangiovese. The first grape was planted in Reynella in 1838. McLaren Vale's most famous winemakers are the Rosemount, Seaview, Wirra Wirra Estate and Hardys groups. This region's people are passionate about the local produce, food, wine and culture and is evident through their hospitality. If I were going to recommend 3 wineries, they would be:

PRIMO ESTATE - McMurtrie Road McLaren Vale

When you drive up you will be inspired by the clean lines of the building inviting you into their cellar door. They make a unique range of wines that reflect their Italian heritage and you can taste away Don't forget to try their 'Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil' - outstanding Become a friend of Primo Estate and receive invitations to their calendar events.

PENNYS HILL - 281 Main Road McLaren Vale

They offer not only wine tasting, but local food produce including fresh eggs from their very own 'on-site' chooks, books, t-shirts, coffee, treats and a great place to sit, relax and have a chat. Penny's Hill was awarded the national Restaurant & Catering Awards title of "Best Restaurant in a Winery" in 2007, 2010 and 2012 at the South Australian Awards. If you are looking for lunch or dinner this is a great spot. If you love your stickies, you have to try Penny's Hill Almond Liqueur. Served chilled, in a liqueurs glass or not, it is reminiscent of Amaretto. Just to die for

PAXTON - Lot 100 Wheaton Road McLaren Vale

Landcross Farm makes up the home of Paxton Wines and often is considered the gateway to the McLaren Vale. Built in 1840 as a sheep and wheat farm it now has 15 different varieties of wines for the tasting at their cellar door.

LANGHORNE CREEK's wine history dates back to 1850. The town sits on the Bremer River and is traditionally known for its reds; Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. These two grape varieties cover approximately 70 of the total vineyard region. The area is 30 minutes-drive from the Middleton Old School House and is just as beautiful as McLaren Vale. There are only a few wineries here, but worth the drive. You'll find:

Angas Plains Wines

Bleasdale

Bremerton Wines

Cleggett Wines

Lake Breeze Wines

Rusticana Wines

Step Rd Winery and Vineyards

LANGHORNE CREEK is a little overlooked which does surprise, as it is the third largest grape growing region in South Australia.

Now...moving a little closer to the Middleton Old School House you will find the CURRENCY CREEK WINE REGION. This is a relatively new wine region and goes from the mouth of the Murray River, covering the historic river port town of Goolwa through to just west of Victor Harbor and includes the region of Hindmarsh Island. The wineries found here are:

Ballast Stone Estate

Currency Creek

Salomon Estate

Two Dragons Wine

Vasaelli

If 'Wines' are your thing you cannot go past a stay at the Middleton Old School House as it is perfectly located to get to all the vineyards on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just perfect! It exceeded our expectations! We had the most beautiful time here. The location, presentation and facilities were spot on. The grounds were well kept and attention to detail really shone through. The combustion fire was easy to use and added to the ambience. We highly recommend this B&B and will definitely stay again. The only small improvement needed would be for the water pressure in the shower to be increased, although, not an easy task in some heritage buildings...
