De Coudie Beach House is located at the pristine Island Beach on Kangaroo Island, off the coast of South Australia. It is approximately a 15 kilometre drive from Penneshaw or 40 kilometre drive from Kingscote. Detailed driving directions will be supplied during the booking process.
The appeal of Island Beach also rests with the fact that it is fringed by dense bushland, with a beautiful sandy beach that stretches as far as the eye can see, and there are no shops, making it the quintessential beach holiday location. For supermarket needs for your stay, Kingscote and Penneshaw supermarkets trade seven days, you may want to call ahead and check the hours depending upon travel arrangements.
The De Coudie Beach House was designed by Sydney Architect, Prue Murdoch, whose brief was to create a modern, liveable design that blended with the natural environment and nestled into the sand hills.
There are three main 'wings' to the house - the main north living wing, the secondary bedroom wing, and the lower bunkhouse. All are separated by and linked with a generous entry, stair hall on each level. All proportions in the house are generous with bi-folding doors creating a magnificent indoor/outdoor feel in the main areas. Despite the generous proportions on the house, it is barely visible from the beach, or indeed any of the surrounds.
Beach access and conditions
The three kilometres of pristine sand and beautiful waters of Island Beach is accessed by a short 1 minute stroll through the dunes from De Coudie. You will be struck by the pure clarity of the water and the brilliant white of the fine beach sands.
