Coles Bay: Coastal Retreat for Outdoor Action

The small town of Coles Bay is nestled along Wineglass Bay on Tasmania’s eastern coast, right next to Freycinet National Park and The Hazards. As such, it has become a hub for outdoor activities of all sorts, both on land and in the sea.

Opt for hikes of all lengths to take in every changing scenery, unwind on deserted beaches or uncover placid inland waterways teeming with wildlife. Whatever you do, make sure to keep your camera close at hand.

Coles Bay holiday rentals range from quaint beachfront cottages to luxury villas offering sweeping views down the coast.

Exploring Freycinet National Park and The Hazards

One of Freycinet National Park’s distinguishing feature is the pink granite mountain range coming right up to the seafront, known as The Hazards. Two granite peaks are connected via a thin isthmus, marking the entrance of the reserve. Scenic lookouts throughout the park provide panoramic views over Wineglass Bay, which is, indeed, shaped quite like a wine glass.

Visitors can also take a series of winding paths to discover the park’s lush forests, isolated beaches, quiet waterways and culturally significant sites, such as shell middens, denoting human activity across the ages.

Mt Freycinet is one the key sites for the annual Australian Three Peaks Race (a sailing, running and climbing race between Beauty Point and Hobart. As you visit the park, keep your eyes peeled for rare white-bellied sea eagles, echidnas, wallabies and a variety of protected plant varieties.

Scenic Walks and Hikes in Coles Bay

There are many walks of all lengths around Coles Bay, both in and out of Freycinet National Park. For a short, scenic stroll, wander along Sleepy Bay’s rocky ridges and overlook the often turbulent waters. The path takes only 10 minutes to complete.

For a halfway trek, delve into Aboriginal culture and opt for the Hazards Beach Walk, which takes roughly 5 hours to the end and back. Ambitious walkers have the opportunity to join a guided tour of the entire Freycinet Peninsula on foot, which takes 4 days. Experienced hikers, meanwhile, can undertake steep walks up to the summits of the Hazards, such as the journey up Mt Amos.

Coles Bay Beaches

The beaches of Coles Bay are graced with white sand and clear water. In fact, Wineglass Bay is often ranked amongst the top 10 beaches on the planet. A steep path leads to a lookout towering over the beach, affording panoramic views over the ocean and hinterland.

Coles Bay beaches generally boast protected areas, with good swimming conditions. The Hazards Beach is one of the most popular for those seeking a leisurely stroll or swim. Muir Beach is an exception, as its waves are somewhat bigger than those of nearby beaches, making it a prime spot for surfers.

Water Sports in Coles Bay

Boating and kayaking opportunities abound in the waters of Coles Bay. Hop aboard a sailing cruise around the bay and take in the scenery from a luxury yacht. In season, you’ll be able to spot whales and dolphins frolicking in the coastal waters.

For more action, join a guided kayak tour within Freycinet National Park, or head out on your own. Experienced sea kayakers can make their way to Schouten Island, with its own white sandy beaches, home to little blue penguins and fur seals.

Fishing is a big pastime in Coles Bay. Reel in Australian salmon, squid or flathead close to shore. In the fall, head out in the open water for big game fishing and try your luck at catching some tuna.
