Description

The Lodge commands an absolute riverfront position on the southern bank of the famous Arthur River, just upstream of where it flows west into the pounding surf of the Southern Ocean. Consequently, the view from the living areas of both units could reasonably be described as "stupendous" and certainly an absolute standout from most holiday rental properties. The setting and quality of the Lodge are confirmed by comments written in our guest book:

"D&K. We enjoyed our stay....what an outlook...

"I and F de la R. We loved our stay in this beautiful spot. Very peaceful looking out at the river and ocean and local birds...

"D&N. Last minute booking, unsure what to expect....The views and location are quite amazing....So lovely walking in to find the wood heater set to light; great touch"

The recently rebuilt and substantially extended Lodge building completed January 2008 is divided into two apartments. This listing is for the larger 3 bedroom UPSTREAM apartment. For the two bedroom Downstream apartment, please see its separate Stayz listing.

The Lodge is proving popular for larger groups of up to 12 people who can be accommodated across the two apartments. There is convenient internal access between the living areas of the two units, which together offer great living and cooking space for large groups, with the two kitchens and living areas combined. When both units are booked by the same party, a 10 discount applies. The two apartments together received an award for the best group accommodation in Tasmania.

The unusual and stylish design of the Lodge was significantly influenced by the sprawling family "shack" from which it was developed and by the wish to showcase the view, whilst trapping the warmth of the sun. The result is an attractive, fresh, one-of-a-kind design, with interesting angles inside and out. The visual impact of the unusually spacious living area is enhanced by its high, raked ceilings, exposed beams and by the clean, modern decor.

The Upstream apartment has a huge main room with a lofty raked ceiling for sitting, dining and cooking. It provides two sitting areas. This room looks out to the north and west onto the view of the ocean and Arthur River. The extensive north-facing patio which is shared with the Downstream apartment is a sun trap and is sheltered from the cooler south or south-west winds. When shade is needed, this is provided by the several market umbrellas stored on the patio. The patio is an ideal place to unwind, have a meal around your outdoor table and take in nature.

The patio slopes to the fully fenced large lawn, so that small children and pets can be safely confined to the northern side of the property. between the Lodge and the river. Beyond the lawn, and through a small gate, there is a path that goes down a short, steep slope, then on to the river edge, where it is possible to fish, keep canoes or moor a boat

The main bedroom has a queen-size bed, the second a double and the third two bunk beds. All have double-glazed windows. A fold-out double couch at one end of the living room gives a fourth sleeping area.

There is one bathroom which has a WC, small bath and shower over the bath. The well-equipped laundry has a second WC.

Even if the sun does not shine and it is freezing outside, you will be as warm as you want, as the building is well insulated and heated throughout. There is a slow-combustion wood stove firewood provided and reverse cycle air-conditioning if you do not want to light the fire. The bedrooms have wall-mounted electric heaters

WHAT ARTHUR RIVER VILLAGE AND ITS SURROUNDS HAVE TO OFFER

Experience being sandwiched between the Tarkine Forest and the wild West Coast of Tasmania where Tasmanian devils and diverse wildlife still abound.

The Arthur River village is unique for its position on the edge of the Tarkine Forest, right on the rugged West coast, as it is the only easily accessed settlement that faces the Southern Ocean on Tasmania's rugged West Coast. The village straddles the mouth of the wild and undammed Arthur River in the middle of the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area, which encompasses much of the Tarkine Forest. For those who live in the northern part of Tasmania, this is a highly regarded holiday destination.

Wildlife abounds in the huge Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area. The animals treat the village as part of their home. A large wombat lives in the storm-drain beside the Lodge and frequently ambles down the road and around the house. Spotted quolls have been, well- spotted, crossing the front lawn. Tasmanian devils are seen frequently in the village.

Apart from people who live on the North and West Coasts of Tasmania, the Arthur River area is a little known for its fishing, but it is, in fact, a great destination for fishermen, with trout in the river and good beach and rock fishing.

The coast just north of the River is famed for its surf, so that each year there are major national surfing and wave-sailing events. At other times, the breaks are never crowded.

It is easy to explore the wonderful, varied and accessible coastline which has sweeping beaches and little coves between rocky outcrops. You can walk from the village along the coast to the north or south of the River mouth, or reach the coast further to the north or south from the Village at several points by road.

You can launch your own boat into the river at a ramp just down the road and then keep it on the river bank in front of the Lodge. Alternatively, you can hire a boat or canoe at the local boat hire. The river mouth is not safe for access to the sea, but you can travel easily by boat inland for 15km up the Arthur River and much further than that in a canoe to see the pristine and majestic Tarkine forest. If you prefer to have someone else do the navigation and to have the local natural features pointed out to you, take a trip up the river on the characterful George Robinson cruise boat. Book early on. The "George Robbie" leaves from the village just across the river from the Lodge on most days other than in July to August

There are many other attractions within a 100km radius of the village, including historic and pretty Stanley and the huge dairy and wind farm at Woolnorth, right on the top left-hand corner of Tasmania.

The main road that enters Arthur River village from the north is well-engineered and sealed. The scenic Western Explorer Road continues south of the village to Corinna, from where it is easy to reach Strahan and all of southern Tasmania. The section of the Western Explorer between Arthur River and Couta Rocks was sealed in 2014.. This little-known road makes it possible to complete a loop around much of Tasmania's coastline. Parts of the Western Explorer remain unsealed, but these sections are well-maintained and suitable for all vehicles, when driven carefully.

FAMILY FRIENDLY FEATURES;

We aim to make the Lodge as family friendly as possible. The virtually flat large front lawn is securely enclosed, not only to keep small children in, but the wallabies out, as their poo is very messy.

A high chair and a portacot with linen are available at no extra cost. Both apartments are equipped with plastic plates and cutlery designed for children.

We do not, however, provide guards for the wood stoves, so these must not be used when small children are in your party.

SHOPPING AND FUEL

It is important to note that there is only a small food store in Arthur River village which also makes good take-away food. No vehicle or boat fuel is available in the village. There are general stores north of Arthur River at Marrawah 14 km and Redpa 17 km which have fuel bowsers.

The nearest supermarkets are 65 km northwest of Arthur River at Smithton.
