Sheltered in a valley surrounded by native forest, the north facing timber home with large open plan living area offers two bedrooms, main with queen size bed with luxurious linen and electric blanket, and antique chaise lounge soaking up the northern sun in the bay window looking out to the iconic Sisters Hills in the distance. Adjoining this bedroom with solid timber door (not technically soundproof but close to), is the second bedroom with two single beds with natural cotton linen, and French doors overlooking a a grass area with beautiful sunsets.
There is a work desk and large dining table (8 seats), two lounge areas, one with an additional single ensemble bed, the other with a double futon sofa bed and window seat in the sun overlooking the freshly planted herb garden and frog pond. A large clawfoot bath in the freshly renovated bathroom looks out to the forest canopy bordering the property, and unique hand crafted timber work from trees milled on site is featured in both the bathroom vanity and kitchen wash area.
The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped, with everything from pizza stone and seasoned wok to baking equipment. There is a new electric oven, or create the most amazing tastes and aromas with a pot of hearty soup on the wood stove top, or scones baking in the oven below. There is no microwave and we have minimal electrical appliances (toaster, kettle and hand mixer provided) as we are aiming to create a healthy, sustainable environment and include eco-friendly as a property feature. We have solar power connected to grid supply so no inconvenience, and are midway through renovations to move the wood stove next to the hot water system later in the year, along with laying an earth floor over the existing concrete slab.
Timber floors have been oiled with beautiful healthy natural oils, and we will be continuing renovations with natural clay paints, we use only natural cleaning products, and there are several pure cotton and woollen rugs. Spaces are decorated in the warmth of autumn tones, with collected original Aboriginal artwork, along with original Australian landscape and abstract paintings.
There is no TV reception as we don't need it to retreat from the world here, but there is a TV and DVD player, a stereo with connection to iPod, phone or computer, and if you bring your laptop we usually have good service with Telstra for on demand TV with your mobile wifi (depending on your connection this can sometimes slow in peak times). There is a DVD rental store in Wynyard, 20 minutes drive away with hotels, cafes, bakery and all fresh supplies, and an airport with more than four flights a day to Melbourne.
A cosy play area is setup for young children in the open plan living space close to the kitchen, and outside is an undercover area with an outdoor sink, overlooking a large flat play area with trampoline, with the Dip Range Regional Nature Reserve providing a typically beautiful Tasmanian forest backdrop, which eventually joins the Tarkine.
Wildlife take refuge here along with us, with abundant bird species, frogs, reptiles, microbats, insects including dragonflies, and from dusk to dawn the Pademelons and their young graze around the grassy areas (although there are less than usual after fires and floods this year). The Tasmanian Devils though rarely seen, can sometimes be heard in the forest echoes (be sure not to leave shoes outside as they have taken many to play with or hide), possums are often about, and occasionally the resident echidna can be found wandering around during the day.
We are less than 15 minutes drive to the renowned Boat Harbour Beach and cafe, with Sisters Beach and Rocky Cape National Park walks a little further on, or around the same distance to popular Seabreeze restaurant and cafe overlooking the Bass Strait with wood fired pizza and great coffee. We're around midway between Burnie and Stanley, making it an ideal base to explore the north west area.
The property is still being renovated with some areas unfinished, the toilet is located in the second bathroom easily accessed from the kitchen through the carport and we have priced it accordingly (we are in the process of designing a new compost toilet and laundry room adjoining the new bathroom). It is simple, earthy, homely, extremely comfortable and all who come here have enjoyed the sense of privacy and space from the usual demands of life. Also, allthough the farm is being setup using Biodynamic growing methods with a permaculture design, we are in a conventional farming area with neighbouring properties undertaking mixed cropping and dairy farming, which may mean continuous working in paddocks at peak times during harvest and planting seasons. There is also a section of unsealed road access, which may not be covered by insurance for hire cars, please check with the hire company.
