A special getaway destination, 12 kms from historic Richmond. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city, enjoy the peace and listen to the birds. Ideal for Hobartians who don't want to travel too far! On the way and when you leave, wander in Richmond and visit some of the nearby vineyards.
The Butterfly House BnB is a cosy studio apartment at Campania Hills, It has a kitchenette, separate ensuite and separate laundry. A continental breakfast and a welcome pack (a bottle of Tasmanian wine and snacks) are provided. Amenities include a microwave, electric frypan, BBQ, kettle, toaster, full-size fridge, washing machine, QS bed, hairdryer, CD and DVD player (and a selection of discs), heating, books, magazines, board games, gas BBQ and outdoor area with the use of a firepot if conditions are suitable. Safety features - smoke alarm, fire extinguisher, fire blanket and first aid kit.
Our 3.5 acre block faces NNE and the vegetation is mostly native. We overlook a valley with views of pasture and bush. There is no light pollution so, on cloudless nights, the starry sky is magnificent.
Enjoy spotting the wildlife - birds, lizards, tadpoles (and maybe frogs) and butterflies (in summer). If you're lucky, you may see a larger animal, such as an echidna, a possum, a pademelon or a wallaby.
Our house, shed and BnB have recently been built. The house is solar passive and features a sandstone and bottle wall internally, providing thermal mass. You are most welcome ask us about any aspect of the build. The BnB adjoins the shed, but is constructed with the same materials as the house. We lived there when we built the house. We operate on eco-friendly principles and whilst connected to the grid, we rely heavily on solar power.
It is unlikely that you will have internet, mobile phone or TV reception here. Maybe that's a good thing if you want to get away from it all! However, you may find a spot (try the stump near the water tank) where you can get a signal for your phone. Your hosts are available in an emergency and can make a phone call for you if needed.
Campania is a very dry part of the State. With the lack of water, poor soil, wallabies, rabbits and possums, gardening here is a challenge. Feel free to ask us about the measures we have taken to manage this. We are on tank water and in a low rainfall area and ask that guests use water wisely. This is a non-smoking property (indoors and out) and due to the bush setting, no fires are permitted on the property unless we deem it safe for you to use the firepot.
Campania has a General Store and a Post Office/shop. Take-aways and fuel are available at both businesses. There is also a bar and bistro where you can get meals on selected days and evenings and drinks any day of the week. An occasional Farmers' Market is held on a Sunday. Nearby Richmond has numerous attractions, including the Old Richmond Gaol, the famous Richmond Bridge, cafes, gift shops, antiques, a doctors surgery, hairdressers, local produce, 2 small supermarkets, bakery, chemist and a Saturday market. The Coal River Valley has many vineyards which are well worth visiting.
When you drive along Native Corners Road, it becomes unsealed 900 metres before you reach our driveway. This unsealed section is usually in good condition. Our 200 metre driveway is also unsealed, in good condition and suitable for 2 wheel drive vehicles.
