Drive around the islands 200km of coast and with over 70 shipwrecks, there is a lot to explore. A must is Yellow Rock River and Yellow Rock Beach which is a tidal river and bird haven on the west coast where you can see the only visible remains of one of the many shipwrecks. Keep driving and a visit to Penny's Lagoon is a treat. A suspended lake where the water is held by compacted sand and the vegetation, would you believe this is only one of three in the world
Continuing with wonders there is the Cape Wickham Lighthouse. Built in 1861 using the local granite, the tallest lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere stands an amazing 52metres. This grand dame has just celebrated its 150 years and was officially opened by our Governor General Quentin Bryce. It was her first lighthouse ever to open.
A visit to the island would not be complete with viewing the calcified forest. The 7000 year old remains of an ancient forest, revealed when the lime sand which had covered and preserved the stumps, trunks and branches were removed by wind. Close by is the magnificient cliff of Seal Rocks that overlooks the Southern Ocean, great to view on a wild day. It has an excellent walking track.
Horse riding on the beach is a favourite.
