ACTIVITIES AND SIGHT SEEING
The Tamar River:
The Tamar River is nestled in the historic Tamar Valley and is easily accessed from Mayrhofen. It is Australia's longest navigable estuary and flows through pasture land, orchards, vineyards and forests. Its coves and protected inlets provide sanctuary for thousands of native water birds.
The Tamar Conservation Area is on the Tamar River estuary and includes the Tamar Island Wetlands Reserve. It is a popular area for bird watching and there are approximately 3.2 km of walking tracks at the wetlands including a boardwalk for easy access to the island.
The river offers many activities from delightful picnic and swimming areas to attractions such as Seahorse World, Platypus House and river cruises are also available.
Wine & Restaurants:
The Tamar Valley is home to the Tamar Valley Wine Route which offers more than thirty cellar doors spread over 170km around the Tamar Valley. The first great wine tasting treat is around the corner at just two kilometres away from the house.
Tasmania has won numerous foodie awards over the last few years and we can recommend some absolutely world class restaurants for you to choose from and all are within a 20 minute drive.
If hiking is on the holiday agenda Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair National Park boast an abundance of natural wonders. As a UNESCO World Heritage Wilderness Area you will see ancient rainforests, alpine heathlands, icy streams cascading out of the rugged mountain terrain and ancient pines mirrored in the still waters of glacial lakes. There is also the possibility of seeing a Tasmanian Devil.
Ben Lomond National Park is described as a craggy plateau. In spring and summer it is abundant with wildflowers and provides a breathtaking hiking experience. In winter the park turns into a very cute and small ski resort that is perfect for families. It has seven lifts and snow making machines. The best thing is it takes less than 2 hours to get here from ‘Mayrhofen’. Mid July to October are the best times for skiing with the warmer months more suitable for hiking.
Launceston and its surrounding areas have something to offer everyone, however our most memorable times have been at Mayrhofen by the lake. We hope Mayrhofen brings you and your family just as many memorable moments.
Grindelwald Swiss Village:
This quaint Swiss Village is an easy 10 minute walk away for tea, lunch, dinner and family fun that includes a children's playground, bouncing cushions, paddle boats, mini golf as well as a golf course for golfing enthusiasts.
