The Snellery is situated in the quiet and leafy suburb of Invermay. Invermay is located close to the centre of the City of Launceston which is found on the banks of the Tamar River in north-eastern Tasmania.

Invermay was built up in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Snellery was built in 1921.

The Apartment:

Set in the beautiful gardens at the rear of the Snellery is a self-contained apartment. It is this building that is offered as guest accommodation. The apartment was built in 2012.

The apartment comprises four rooms and incorporates a passage:

A large sitting room with good quality, leather upholstered seating; a large coffee table; a desktop computer with free Internet access and TV tuner and; a bookshelf with a selection of books are all provided.

A giant sized bedroom with built in wardrobe, a queen sized bed and a two seat leather couch and a television. All bed linen and towels are supplied.

Off the bedroom is a large bathroom - tiled floor to ceiling with vanity, large shower cubicle and WC.

Access to the kitchen is provided through a passageway with a utility cupboard. A steam iron with ironing board, brooms and other cleaning supplies are stored in the cupboard which is also suitable for suitcase storage.

The kitchen is equipped with a large fridge/freezer, a microwave oven, a kettle and a toaster. A dry powder fire-extinguisher is located in the kitchen adjacent to the exterior entrance door in that room. All crockery, cutlery and glassware, tea, coffee and milk are supplied.

Three smoke detectors are fitted in the apartment: one each in the sitting room, bedroom and passageway - with the latter providing emergency escape lighting in the event of its being triggered.

Smoking inside the apartment is not permitted but comfortable seating is provided in the gardens on the boardwalk outside the sitting room entrance. In the event of inclement weather, further comfortable seating is supplied on the covered and well ventilated Quarterdeck where smoking is permitted. There is a gas-fired, Baby Q by Weber on the Quarterdeck which is attached to the main house.

Breakfast - either continental or a la carte - may be supplied by prior arrangement with the owner. A mini-bar may also be supplied on request. Prior notice of a requirement for a mini-bar is preferred.

A mature and friendly, neutered, male English Springer-Spaniel - named Freddie - resides at The Snellery. Freddie will be delighted to meet you but those who may be dog-phobic might not wish to stay with us as Freddie thinks he owns the place.

Your hosts - Tony and Tui - will also be delighted to meet you and we look forward to welcoming you here time and again.

The Snellery is indeed close to everything in Launceston: The city centre - which hosts the annual Festivale celebration at City Park in February and the Esk Beerfest in January - is about 1.8 km away; the route to the city passes the University of Tasmania UTas Stadium - formerly known as Aurora Stadium - which is the Tasmanian home of the Mighty Hawks Australian Football Club 1 km; the Queen Victoria and the Tramways Museums 1.3 km, The Inveresk Campus of UTas 1.3 km, The James Boag Brewery situated on the bank of the North Esk River 1.4km.

Closer still is the delightful Heritage Forest which has an entrance at the eastern end of Henty Street - some 300m from the Snellery.

The Newnham Campus of UTas is around 3 km away and it is reached via Mowbray Shopping Town some 2 km away. Launceston Horse, Harness and Greyhound Race meetings are held at the track adjacent to the Mowbray Shopping Town.

The magnificent and renowned Cataract Gorge lies on the western edge of the city some 4 km from the Snellery.

A frequent and reliable bus service operates along Invermay Road which runs at the western end of Henty Street - some 400m from the Snellery. The bus route is from the UTas Newnham Campus to the City Centre.

The wine and orchard routes that run along either side of the Tamar River are easily accessible from the Snellery. Driving time to complete the circuit travelling along the east bank, crossing the Batman Bridge and returning along the western bank or vice versa is only about an hour but there are more areas to visit beyond the Batman Bridge including the historic mining town of Beaconsfield with its Mine and Heritage Museum and also the beaches at Beauty Point and Greens Beach near to the estuary of the Tamar River. The roads in these areas are very good.

The state capital - Hobart - which is home to the Museum of New Art MONA and Dark Mofo - is around two and half hours' drive away keeping to the speed limits. The route to Hobart passes through historic Campbelltown and close by Ross and Oatlands.

Devonport, terminal of the Spirit of Tasmania car and passenger ferries lies about one hour's drive to the west of Launceston with Burnie about half an hour further on and Stanley about an hour beyond Burnie.

Cradle Mountain is about two and a half hours' drive and the ski resort of Ben Lomond is only about one hour's drive.

Further afield are historic Queenstown 4.5 hours with its famous APT Railway and mines located on the wild, woolly and quite beautiful west coast. A few kilometres further on is the picturesque town of Strahan on the fabulous Macquarie Harbour and; the thought provoking ex penal colony of Sarah Island a short distance up the Gordon River.

The beaches of Coles Bay, Wine Glass Bay, St Helens, Freycinet, Swansea and Bicheno are all to be found on the east coast - about two and half hours' drive from The Snellery.

Further South is Bruny Island and the ex-penal colony of Port Arthur.

There is so much more to see and do in Tasmania than is recorded here. Key descriptive words include 'unspoiled', 'clean' and 'green'. The air quality here is wonderful and signs for local cottage industries such as micro-breweries, small wineries, cheese makers and even boutique distilleries are to be seen on every road as you drive along.

The people are hospitable - there are only half a million of us State wide and all of us want to share this island with you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect hosts Tony and Tui are perfect hosts with clear prompt communication up to, during and after the stay to check that everything was shipshape. We were really made to feel at home. The room is very clean, modern and spacious; more like a luxury suite with a separate lounge, kitchenette and bathroom. Would definitely stay there again, thanks Tony and Tui and Fred (the dog)!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfy place, Welcoming people. We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Snellery, Tony and Tui were more than hospitable to us during our stay. The accommodation itself was spacious and comfortable, the heating and air-conditioning was much appreciated. Our host were very considerate in regards to our request for breakfast and even lent us pots and pans because we were lacking of some to cook our dinner. They also helped inform us of some of the local attractions and had a few brochures on hand. Overall we couldn't have asked for any more generosity from our hosts and would happily stay at the Snellery again!
