The best of both worlds Situated in the middle of the sand spit forming Pipe Clay Lagoon to one side and the dunes of Clifton Beach to the other, Lagoon Dreaming offers close access to both. Walk around the lagoon while your children hunt for crabs and play in the clear, shallow water. Take a stroll through the coastal reserve to the beach for a swim, surf or walk along the dunes. If you just want to relax closer to home, the loudest sounds you will hear are the abundant bird life and the surf breaking on the beach.

The House

Lagoon Dreaming is a red cedar timber house built in 1991 around eight large tree trunks. Although it is a comfortable 5 bedroom home it maintains some of the rustic feel and character of the original Clifton Beach shacks. It is perfect for family groups and will accomodate two families easily. There is plenty of room both inside and out so everyone can find their own space. The house is set on 5 acres of private land and offers uninterupted views of the lagoon. To the rear it is sheltered by light bush, home to native wildlife including parrots, cockatoos, blue tongue lizards, possums and potaroos. Kookaburras and owls have also made the occasional appearance and the area below the front decking was home to a young family of Echidnas for a while. The driveway meanders directly from the lagoon to the front entrance of the house. Through the sliding doors is the open lounge/kitchen area with a tree trunk at its centre that extends through the ceiling and into the main bedroom above. There is also a large free standing wood burner whose chimney also extends through the ceiling, heating the area above in the colder months. From the many windows of the upstairs bedroom there are striking views of the lagoon. There is also a balcony overlooking the bush to the rear, great for a little privacy. There are two bathrooms: one on the lower level and an ensuite in the main bedroom upstairs. Both are equiped with a toilet, vanity and shower, while the lower level also includes a bath. There is decking at the front and a fenced area to the rear for the evening barbie. The fenced area can be used as a safe play area for young children, or as a secure area for pets.

The Area

At just under 30 minutes to the centre of Hobart and all the attractions this beautiful city has to offer, Lagoon Dreaming is about as close as you can get while still experiencing the beach lifestyle Clifton has to offer. There is good fishing from the local beaches and through the lagoon channel to Frederick Henry Bay if boating. Access is by purpose built ramp or directly from the edge of the lagoon at nearby Cremorne. North Clifton can generate strong surf and currents at times, which is great for surfers and kayakers, but for families and safer swimming the tamer South Clifton is patrolled from December to March. However you prefer to relax, there is something for everyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very memorable Christmas holiday Amazing location and excellent property. Gives you the bush retreat but within a reasonable distance to shops & Hobart. Fully equiped. Great house with plenty of room inside & out especially for groups & families with children. The beautiful beach is a 10min walk & there is a muttonbird colony on the headland that we walked to regulary. Amazing Australian wildlife everywhere! Places like Hobart, Mt Wellington, Richmond, Port Arthur all a relatively short drive away. Couple of points for the owner; The house wasnt very clean when we arrived and some linen smelt mildewy. Need a gauge on the water tank. If it wasnt for the rain, we might have run out of water-we had 9 people. It kept tripping out aswell which was annoying. Need a lock on the cleaning cupboard under the sink. We had to put string around the handles to stop our toddler from getting in. Only minor points that wouldnt stop us from returning though. We had an amazing holiday which we will remember forever. Thank- you!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Rustic or just dated ? We stayed at this property during summer. We found the location and proximity to Hobart to be good. The property was home to all sorts of wildlife, and our children did love to see wallabies, possums and rabbits roaming the property. We also experienced wildlife of a much less pleasant manner (the 8 legged variety) on a somewhat consistent basis. Some would refer to the home as being rustic, but we found it simply to be tired, and in desperate need of some TLC and basic repairs. Perhaps if the owner spend the same effort on repairs as they did on laminating a sign to advise that the "window is broken, and cannot be opened", the property may have been more comfortable. This is particularly given no fans and no airconditioning, and no fly screens on windows, meant it was difficult to cool the house down, without an open invitation to flies, insects and the like. In the same manner as the 'rustic' home, the linen and bedding is probably as 'original' as the home is. Whilst the location was ok (about a 25 minute drive to Hobart), don't be fooled into thinking this is a "beachside getaway". The beach is only across the road from the property, however is neither suitable for swimming, or even for playing. As for cleanliness, if you are ok with carpet that is far to old to ever be considered clean, with spider webs (and their residents) throughout the house, and generally dated decor, then you will be fine - otherwise you should carefully consider. Perhaps not our most pleasant and enjoyable holiday accomodation, but each to their own.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice place to stay We enjoyed our stay at this house. Our grandson (5y) liked all the toys and books he found. There is a lot of wildlife around the house in the nights. We speciffically liked the bedroom on the 1th floor with a spectacular view! We had some cold nights: it wasn't easy to start the wood-heater.
