Tuppence Cottage is located in peaceful Dartmoor, south west Victoria just a stones’ throw to the South Australian border, an hour to Hamilton, 40 minutes to Portland and a half hour drive to Heywood, Casterton, Nelson and Mount Gambier. The town is central within a region packed with experiences from river to coast, caves to cliffs and is amidst forests and national parks.
There are plenty of lovely walks in the area around Dartmoor township itself as well as further afield through the Lower Glenelg National Park including the Great South West Walk.
The region offers an abundance of activities to enjoy including canoeing and fishing on the Glenelg River, the Princess Margaret Rose Caves, the memorial tree carvings in the main street of Dartmoor, the limestone coast of nearby South Australia and the famous Mount Gambier Blue Lakes and caves. You will also be within a half hour drive to the beaches at Nelson and beautiful Cape Bridgewater, and Casterton the home of the Kelpie. Then it’s just an hour across the border to South Australia to the famous Coonawarra Wine Region. Dartmoor is an ideal holiday destination being central to these wonderful attractions.
Tuppence Cottage is located on a large block with peaceful garden and surrounds and park land at front and rear. In the district keep your eye out for brolgas, red and yellow tailed black cockatoos and wedge tailed eagles and plentiful emu.
You will need to be self-sufficient as the owner will not be present.
Dartmoor has a well-stocked general store and hotel that has good meals, but ideally shop before you arrive in order to prepare meals. The basics like tea, coffee, sugar, salt and pepper are provided. Tuppence Cottage has a large yard and garden to enjoy. It is only a short walk to the Glenelg River and Fort O’Hare Picnic and Camp Ground. There is a kitchen with all facilities, linen and towels provided and washing machine.
Dartmoor is an old timber town but with the mill long closed it is a hidden gem that a few fortunate people have discovered as a fabulous place to live or visit. It is a fairly self-sufficient town with a with a health service, primary school, bowling club and golf course. For those who enjoy AFL it is the home of Greater Western Sydney start Jeremy Cameron. The Local Football team is now the Dartmoor Giants due to this alliance.
Dartmoor offers plenty of walking tracks, fishing, picnic facilities and a picturesque 9-hole golf course.
Paestan Canoe Hire at nearby Winnap offers complete canoe hire service either for a few hours or 4 day/3 night trips.
A VLine bus services Dartmoor daily to main centres and rail at Warrnambool. No other public transport is available. It is possible to fly to Portland or Mount Gambier.
