Otways Loft is curious mix of tree-house, vintage train, raw and recycled materials, set in a rambling adventure garden.
The long awaited sister property to Liptrap Loft. This is the second holiday rental property developed by Dufflebird and Liptrap Loft (3 time Stayz State award winner & 2 time National award winner).
We scoured Victoria to find a property to match Liptrap Loft in unique character & charm. The property in Forrest was quite run-down, but we renovated the house and Otways Loft has been set up solely as holiday accommodation.
It is not 5 star luxury, but we can say with confidence that it is UNIQUE. The builder lived in a shed on-site, and craned in a train carriage to use as a workshop, while he was building the house. It is an eclectic construction, built on a framework of local tree poles. In parts, it is three story high. The interior is a mixture of components from the train carriage, locally felled timber, materials from a nearby church, and other salvaged bits and pieces. It was a labour of love.
Forrest is a gorgeous small town of weatherboard shacks, surrounded by towering Mountain Ash rain forest with verdant ferny under story. It is lush and abundant. The dawn birdsong is deafening. There is a lot to do around Forrest even if you are not a mountain biker.
Fine dining is available at the Guesthouse restaurant Bespoke Harvest (book ahead), and the Brewery offers great food and you must try the locally brewed beer. Good coffee is available at the General Store (with old fashioned lollies) and Corner Store, only a couple of hundred meters away. For pub fare, the pub doesn't disappoint and is open every night, always with a toasty fire in winter. All within walking distance, and all using predominantly local produce.
Spoil yourself and make it a long weekend. Take the Great Ocean Road home on Monday when there is no one around.

Zoe (Age 14) December 2014- From the Guestbook
" I never imagined a place quite like this, a place where a mind could run free, a place where trains could be houses and dreams only a touch away. Even when I just sat and stared at the gardens, I knew this was a place I would love to live at. It was magic. Fairies lurking in nooks and crannies, dragons curled up in corners, even the feeling that fire sprites could be lurking, hiding amongst the piles of wood, waiting to be sparked alight by a lone match. If I closed my eyes I could imagine the person clicking away on the typewriter, endless one-sided conversations from the old phone. A writers dream only a touch away.
And the day we spent walking around the lake got me thinking. ‘Why are we destroying the magic in our lives?’ Slowly as I drew a breath, I realised that we weren’t destroying magic, we were preserving it in the hands of those who dare to imagine.
And I am sure that tomorrow, when the time comes to leave, the magic will call forward it’s next believer into this wonderful place, to show those who dare to come here that magic still exists."

"The Otways Loft is a special place in a special part of the world. We loved how the house was crafted from recycled train parts and timber. It is enormous but still cosy. Our older daughter loved her hideaway bedroom at the very top of the house. The bath in the master bedroom has a perfectly positioned triangle window so you're soaking and looking out into the treetops. We woke up to views of a stunning sunrise (a nearby rooster sounded the alarm) from all the upstairs windows.
The hosts had thought of everything needed in the large kitchen. We could easily have shared our stay with another family and had room for everyone to sleep and cook together.
The fire kept everyone warm in the middle of a winter cold snap. We did venture out and enjoyed the pies and sweet treats from the cute General Store nearby and drinks and snacks at the Forrest Brewery nearby. Both are easy walking distance (like, up a laneway alongside the house). A walk to Lake Elizabeth is a must for any visitor. Fine for kids (bring gumboots if it's been raining) to do and really stunning.
We hope to come back soon. Thanks Fleur for being so easy to communicate with and for putting such thought and care into the Loft. We really appreciated all the little touches in the facilities and decorating - even the great book selection!"

"This is the sort of place that has something for everyone. Gorgeous Eco friendly lotions, fire place and rustic setting made the interior of reclaimed train parts something else. The kids loved all the quirky spaces and upstairs loft. The adults loved the claw foot bath inside heir bedroom with tree lined views from every window. Decorated beautifully with so much warmth and character it made it hard to leave. Good thing we'll be back next year!"

"The house was absolutely gorgeous and was such a pleasure to stay at! The location was lovely, with amazing views from the upstairs bedrooms. It was very spacious yet cosy, had great cooking facilities, and was very comfortable. The uniqueness of the house also just made the stay that little bit extra special. Fleur was a wonderful host. She was easy to get in contact with and was very friendly and helpful. She provided us with a number of recommendations and answered any questions promptly. Would definitely love to stay there again - hopefully as soon as possible!"
