Things to do

Tower Hill Nature Reserve

To see an arial drone video made by a guest of Tower Hill House and surrounding, please click here:

Though you can drive through, there is direct access to the reserve from our garden. The Tower Hill Nature Reserve is nestled inside an extinct volcano and is a beautiful haven for all sorts of wildlife. You will see kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, emus and many species of water birds.

Tower Hill is also great for bushwalking and picnics BBQs and facilities provided. Guided day or night tours can be booked at the Tower Hill Natural History Centre T , which is open daily.

Tower Hill was created some 25,000 years ago in a violent volcanic eruption. The force of the blast created a funnel shaped crater, which was later filled by a lake and island.

On a walk you could well see possums, echidnas, cape barren geese and wedge–tailed eagles – Australia’s largest bird of prey. Keen twitchers might also spot chestnut teal, musk duck and spoonbills from the boardwalks and bird hide. Eagles often soar at dusk.

There are numerous activities and events throughout the year in both Port Fairy and nearby Warrnambool. This includes festivals, boat trips, beach walks, golf, shopping, restaurants and great food

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't say enough good things about this place! We stayed 4 days at the end of July and didn't want to leave! This is the first place we've stayed at who's description UNDERSOLD how great it was - Richard had obviously considered all the details that make a home, from a full batterie de cuisine in the kitchen to detailed instructions and manuals for all appliances. The wood stove added the final touch for a cozy stay. The wildlife reserve was right behind the house (down the path and over the stile on the back fence if you didn't want to drive down the road to the "official' entrance) and we saw kangaroos, koalas, emus, and lots of birds without effort. Richard stopped by for a short visit most days to make sure we were doing ok, answer questions, and make recommendations, but also provided us plenty of alone time to just enjoy this quiet place in the country. If we ever get back to Australia from our home in the States, we'll definitely be back!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favourite Family Holiday We have just returned from our third stay at Tower Hill House which we call our "Winter Retreat". There is something very special about Tower Hill House and it's surrounds. The old farmhouse itself is warm, comfortable and cosy with an ever-changing view that you could sit and stare at all day. And there is so much to do within a short drive into either Warrnambool or Port Fairy. There are beautiful walks through the Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve which is literally right next door. Emus, koalas and kangaroos guaranteed! Check out Rundells Mahonay Trail Rides up the road, try some whale watching or take a picturesque stroll around Griffiths Island in Port Fairy. There are some fantastic old pubs in the region, excellent cafes and great shopping too. And at the end of the day, curl up by the fire with a beer or a wine and take in the gorgeous view as the day ends. Tower Hill House has everything you need for a relaxing stay, whether you are a couple looking for a romantic getaway or a family looking for fun and adventure. The owner, Richard is warm, welcoming and very helpful with extensive knowledge on things to do or see. We look forward to our next visit to Tower Hill House. Thanks again Richard for another lovely stay!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Very Special Place Such a peaceful and tranquil setting for a few days away. The house is comfortable, has everything you could need and the wood burning stove in the lounge makes the whole house toasty and warm. You have uninterrupted views of the beach and kangaroos, fairy wrens and rabbits running around in the garden. It is right on the doorstep of Tower Hill Reserve where you will see some amazing sights and wonderful wildlife and a very short drive to Port Fairy and Warrnambool where you can see whales (in season) we saw quite a few. Richard is the most wonderful host and a really nice guy. We'll definitely be back when the weather gets warmer to do all of the things we didn't have time to do and I dare say if Richard has vacancies we'll definitely stay at Tower Hill House again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Home away from home - awesome Very lovely property and family friendly. Kids had a great time as lots of room to play inside and out. Lovely fireplace that works wonders and stunning views of ocean! Kitchen had everything we needed even a dishwasher and amazing oven and stove... nothing like freshly baked croissants overlooking the view from the dining/lounge room. We will definitely be back as it's such a great spot and away from main town but not too far from Warrnambool. So many whales when we headed out on day trips towards Port Fairy, Portland and even whales off the Warrnambool breakwater. Great coming to the house at night as there were bunnies and kangaroos everywhere, so this made the trip for the kids. We were even spoilt one morning as a kangaroo mum and joey decided to have a peek at us from the front lawn :) oh and lovely electric blankets too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Home Sweet Home My partner and I had a wonderful time at Tower Hill House. I brought my two dogs along and it was the best place to get away from the City and enjoy nature. We will definitely be coming back!
