Bairnsdale is the gateway to East Gippsland, and contains all the facilities expected of a regional town of over 13,000 people. It has an indoor aquatic centre, art gallery, historical museum, cinema, recreational opportunities eg golf courses, and many cafes, restaurants and hotels. It is the hub of a wide area, and is the ideal spot to use as a base to explore the region in easy day trips. There are orchards, wineries, and regular markets.
The Gippsland Lakes, which form the largest expanse of inland water in the Southern hemisphere, are one of the chief attractions and provide many opportunities for all types of water activities. Paynesville, known as "The Boating Capital of Victoria" is 15 minutes away, and cruises are available taking in Metung Village and Lakes Entrance, which are also easily accessible by road.
