This location is EXCEPTIONAL for all travellers with Queen Victoria Market downstairs, 2-min walk to Elizabeth Street and Melbourne Central Station, access to Elizabeth Street's Asian eateries, and Melbourne's GPO and Hardware Lane are literally down the road. Shopping at the Emporium and Flinders Street are a free tram-ride away.
I would definitely walk everywhere as that's how you see all of Melbourne's laneways, alleys, side streets and hidden spots. But if you wanted, there is free tram access in all directions on Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street. Walk across the road to Queen Victoria Market and to Melbourne Central for all train lines to visit nearby suburbs. There are also some trams directly to popular inner suburban hotspots Richmond, South Yarra, Brunswick, South Melbourne. 1 free tram-ride to Flinders Street.
