Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sadly, cannot recommend. The Bakery is described by the owner as "rustic" and "basic". I do feel, however, that those words do not describe this accommodation accurately. The definition of rustic is - 1. of or relating to the countryside; rural, 2. made in a plain and simple fashion; in particular. We did read previous reviews prior to booking thinking they may have been especially critical but have to say we were incredibly disappointed to find that they were very accurate. Sadly, the accommodation is rundown. There are pieces of wood trim missing in many rooms and upstairs is especially a mish-mash of very crude coverup solutions. The bakery is very cluttered with far too much unloved and neglected furniture for one house. There are numerous pictures that are not hung, just placed on the floor and leant on the wall. It's not necessary to have part bottles of shampoo, body wash, etc left in the bathroom. All the used toothbrushes and toothpaste are not likely to be appreciated by those staying there either. I know the owner comes by occasionally but the have been there for some time. The whole house is quite unkept and unclean. Upstairs there is a decent size hole in the ceiling, with a framed picture pushed into the roof cavity and placed over the hole to cover it. We are requested to bring our own linen, yet all the beds are fully made up, how often they are cleaned, I would not know. We did bring our own linen and slept on top of the made up beds in our own sheets. This bakery is advertised as the oldest building in Walhalla. It is such a shame that it seems to be in such disrepair and disarray, when it has the potential of such beauty of yesteryear. It was a weekend that we were looking forward to, with Walhalla greatly meeting our expectation but, unfortunately, our accommodation did not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 9th time back I think! This is I think the 9th time I've stayed at the Bakery. Just marvellous. This time I took two Chinese exchange students whom are addicted to their phones plus my own teenagers. In a word they had a ball. So worried they would be bored but let's just see what we got up to.... walk through the town, lollie shop, mine tour, swam in creek, built dams in creek, made fires, toasted marshmallows, played games, went to pub (huge meals!) laughed, talked, went to cemetary, kids chopped down trees for firewood with the bluntest axe I've ever seen. Saturday was a beautiful day and there was a private fundraiser at the pub with a live band. We all could hear it through the afternoon and it was raising money for cancer. Best bit was this one older gentleman who stood on a hill in full Scott kilt and get up and played the bag pipes in the late morning whilst everyone was strolling through the town. No idea who he was but the sounds echoing through the valley was just delightful. The people before us were kind enough to leave the place clean and tidy. It's not 5 star but warm and cosy and comfortable. The new stove/oven is amazing and I wanted to take it home. They keep upgrading this place every time I go there. New patio, new heaters, electric blankets, new appliances. I love it. Highly recommend. P.s. My Chinese are bursting to go back!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cosy and comfortable We had a great time at the Old Walhalla Bakery. With young kids in tow, it was great to have a base close to the snow that was cosy and equipped with everything we needed. It's certainly rustic but it was clean and comfortable with a well equipped kitchen and good hot water. The fire was warm and the outside area was great for the kids to play and for the adults to sit around the fire pit after the little ones were in bed. We will definitely come back!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Would not recommend or stay again The house was very dirty, carpets not vacuumed, floors not swept and shower/ bathroom had hairs, old soaps, used facecloths & dirty mats. Many of the lights did not work and the heating not adequate. We had to keep the wood burner door open other wise the fire went out meaning the house filled with smoke and the electric heater didn't get above 15 degrees, although being on the whole time and the fire burning. Being winter we came away from our stay feeling cold and dirty from the house. We don't mind rustic but this was far beyond that and would we not recommend anyone staying here in its current condition - in our view this house is not suitable for rent.
