Welcome to Clunes - The Diamond of the Gold Fields -located just 40 mins from Daylesford and about an hour and 20 mins drive from the Melbourne CBD. Literally bursting with secrets, history, and idyllic country vistas Clunes offers a host of truly unique experiences for a weekend escape.
The Lodge at Clunes is equally historic: originally built in 1900 as the station masters residence in Williamstown. The exuberance of the age is reflected in a host of ornate features of the house including intricate stained glass, graceful metal lacework, hand carved fretwork and mantelpieces, cast iron fireplaces, polished floorboards and 14 foot ceilings.
It now sits proudly on one of the highest hills in Clunes with panoramic 270 degree views over the original corrugated rooftops of town - only a few minutes stroll away.
At the height of the Victorian Gold Rush that Clunes was instrumental in starting - it was here that gold was first discovered in 1851 - the main Street boasted 15 hotels. Today that history lives in a streetscape so photogenic it was featured in Mad Max and Ned Kelly.
The property features a fully equipped farm house style kitchen. The main living area is evocative of a stately manor house complete with classic board games and a record collection from the 70s and 80s.
Each of the bedrooms celebrate different eras from the grand Lincoln bedroom with its massive four poster oak bed, to the Romeo and Juliet Suite that pays homage to Shakespeare while the Music Room gives a nod those timeless tunes of yesteryear. The master bathroom lit by an original chandelier incorporates a contemporary wall fire and features an extra deep designer bath from where you can luxuriate with views to the town.
