Description

The Oaks boasts an original 1860's brick cottage perched on a hill overlooking Mount Beckworth and the township of Clunes. It is set in 1.5 acres of established old fashioned garden, with an orchard, stone barn and various enclosing stone walls. The house has many enchanting period features, and has been tastefully decorated, and featured in Country Style Magazine.

The spacious country kitchen features a large dining table, wood heater set in the original fire place, and windows with views across the garden. The cosy living room has casement windows, and 2 comfortable lounges, with a wood fired heater set in the original fire place. There is a large television with DVD player.

The cottage has 3 bedrooms. At the front of the house there are 2 bedrooms, one with a queen sized bed, the other with two single beds. Both rooms have high ceilings, victorian style beds, and original french doors that open onto a verandah and secluded garden with a lavender hedge. The 3rd bedroom has 2 single beds, and original casement windows that overlook the garden. All beds have electric blankets.

The cottage has a simple bathroom, with a shower over a bath, and basin. There are 2 toilets, and a washing machine.

The property offers views across the historic township of Clunes and Mount Beckworth. Within the grounds there is a walled garden, an old orchard bordered by hawthorne hedge, and several lawn areas. The dramatic oak trees are a feature of the property and are heritage listed. There are table settings suitable for outdoor dining.

The original barn has been sensitively restored to include a delightful additional seating area, that provides shelter for outdoor dining in wet and hot conditions.

For a family this site offers swings, a full size spring free trampoline and a small paddock for games.

The Clunes main street is a short 5 minute walk though the historic Queens Park. Clunes is a charming town that has retained its original gold rush charm. There are many areas of interest that can be experienced on foot, including high quality cafes and shops selling second hand books and old wares. There is also a bakery, butcher, wine bar, supermarket, chemist, and newsagent. There is a delightful walk along the town creek that is home to platypus, and nearby gold fields that have resident wallabies. The public pool is open during the summer months and offers lawns, and a little shop, for the pleasure of local swimmers.

Clunes is a peaceful base for those seeking the relaxation of a country sojourn. It is also in easy reach of many regional attractions:

- Daylesford is a 25 minute drive away, on roads that pass through spectacular landscapes; abandoned gold mines, volcanic hills, and parkland. In the township there is a variety of cafes, restaurants, retail options, galleries, the mineral springs complex, and Sunday morning market with train rides

- Ballarat is a 20 minute drive. As a regional centre it has cinemas, dining options, galleries, botanical gardens, Sovereign Hil, department stores, Lake Wendouree.

- Creswick is a 10 minute drive and has an award winning French patisserie, and The Farmers Arms Hotel and American Hotel are suitable for dining out at nighttime.

- Talbort is a 10 minute drive and has a European style farmers market with excellent local produce in the centre of town, on the 3rd Sunday of each month.

- The award winning Lambly Garden is in Ascot, a 15 minute drive from Clunes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Charming property with elegance and whimsy A lovely place to stay and relax. Wake to wafts of lavender through the French doors. A brief walk down the hill takes you to town via the creek or walk the natural ampitheatre in which Clunes sits. The children loved the swings and climbing ropes on the oaks. Finding a spot in the sun at tables around the house and garden was a pleasure.
