Description

Situated at the centre of the attractions of the Northern Grampians are the two spacious Wartook Rise Cabins each sleeping up to 11 guests.

Guests enjoy a two storey mudbrick cabin elevated with magnificent mountain views across McKenzie River Valley.

Easy main road access, they are next to Grampians National Park.

With only two cabins available guests have exclusive use of a large 300 acre property with abundant wildlife and birds.

Each cabin is completely self contained and private. You have all your own facilities.

A lounge with TV and DVD, leading into a Kitchen, dining, two bedrooms usually two queen and two bathrooms downstairs.

There is an efficient wood stove with free wood supply .There is a large ceiling fan and a Daiken reverse cycle air conditioning unit. A medium sized TV and DVD are in the lounge.

Kitchen is L shaped with 2 efficient, LPG gas burners for stir fry or pasta. A medium sized refrigerator, microwave oven, Electric Frypan, Electric jug, large toaster and coffee machine with filters supplied complete the appliances. All plates, glasses, mugs, bowels and cutlery for 11 guests is in cupboards along with cooking utensiis. There is a high chair available.

The pine dining table was made from old kauri pine church pews.Cut-down church pews, wooden chairs and Casala plastic retro chairs make up the seating.

Two downstairs bathrooms have recently been renovated, with heaters ,fans and and some towel rails plus hooks. Showers are mobility friendly with a low lip on wider than usual shower recesses. You could put a plastic chair in there if needed. A shower hand rail is installed.

Downstairs Bedrooms are either 2 Queen beds in the Koala Cabin, or a queen bed and double in the Possum cabin. They have two bedside cabinets, with 3 drawers, two reading lamps make relaxing easy. Also downstairs is a cot in each cabin and toddlers bed for children who need to sleep downstairs. The stairs can easily be closed off if needed.

Over the living area is a mezzanine sleeping area with seven single beds arranged in an "L" Shape. Two or four of these single beds could form a good queen bed if needed. The stairway leading to the upstairs loft is full sized and has childproof rails.Whilst open to the living area the beds cannot be seen from below. Stairs have a light at night time.

Dog friendly, secure yard with water, shade and shelter for use when guests go in the National Park. Dogs may sleep outside or inside by the fire in their own beds. $15 per dog per night. Water and food dishes at the cabin.

Outside on the wide back verandah, is your own BBQ and laundry. BBQ's can be used in the hottest/coldest weather as they are under a big roof.

There are two outside 'bush' fireplaces. There is plentiful outdoor seating. Three outside tables are useful from time to time. One table has a shady position under a thick tree for shade and a cool breeze.

Outside fires are possible except on days of total fire ban. You must keep the fire within the confines of the fireplace using wood you have gathered from the forest [plentiful], not the wood supplied for the internal wood stoves.. Rob specially cuts longer pieces for outdoor fires on the edge of the forest. It is essential that the fire is put out completely with water before you go to sleep as winds can spring up in the night. Sitting by the fire is magical under the frequent starry skies.

There are many activities that can be done without the need to drive;

Over the ridge behind the building is a beautiful valley with superb views to the Asses Ears Range.Nestled in this valley is a large lake frequented by many water birds. Also suitable for simple boating {canoe and life jackets available] and yabbying.

Some guests come and feed the poultry and hens. By arrangement explore my garden and hot house.

Children love to play in and on the granite outcrops near the cabins .

Bring a cycle if you can. Both mountain and road bikes can be used. There is an interesting historic trail you can ride on between Rosebrook and Zumsteins.

Walking over the back valley is especially wonderful at sunrise or sunset. If clear you can see to Mt Arapiles 75 km away, Mt Talbot, and the Black Range. Along with the Grampians these mountains were all islands in a giant inland sea stretching right over to South Australia in ancient times. Relics from this time are limestone deposits, white mineral sands, and other materials.

Some guests go yabbying in our dams and we can provide the simple equipment necessary. These fresh water crayfish are delicious if you can catch them. The river ones are protected. But in our dams, there is a good supply. The wild ducks, swans and other birds on our lake live well on them. We can lend you an open yabby net. Opera nets closed not permitted as they drown turtles.

Children enjoy the cubby building area near the cabins, about 40 metres away on the forest edge. Younger children have a safe area around the cabins to ride their bikes/tricycles, play in sand near the glass topped table and explore the large pink granite rocks. They can run and yell, sound bounces off the mountains and disappears down the valley.

There are many possible walks of varying length and we can advise on this.

Some guests walk down to the Platypus pond on sunset hoping for a sighting of them feeding. This is 3.2 km return but you can drive most of the way 3 km if you wish.

Further away and requiring a drive are many attractions .All guests get given good maps and help in finding what they would like to see. McKenzie Falls,Reeds Lookout, Summer Day Valley, Flat Rock and Mt Zero are all within a half drive .

There are a number of pusher and wheelchair friendly hikes including a lookout with excellent views of McKenzie Falls and the Gorge. The Balconies at Reeds Lookout has a 1km wheelchair trail. Formerly the Balconies were called the Jaws of Death, they are spectacular animal head like formations way above the valley floor below. You can see for miles from this lookout. Lonely Planet recommends visiting at sunrise or sunset. it is also special on a moonlit night.
