About Goldfields-Esperance

Goldfields and Esperance: Ghost Towns, White Beaches

The Goldfields and Esperance region of Western Australia encompasses much of the state’s characteristic diversity. From ghost towns and gold mines to coastal archipelagos and white sandy beaches, the south-westernmost part of the state provides many holiday options.

Immerse yourself in local Aboriginal culture in Kalgoorlie, trek through national parks or snorkel in the clear waters around Esperance. As you go about your holiday, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, whales and even kangaroos relaxing on seemingly endless beach.

Holiday rentals in the Goldfields and Esperance region range from seaside cottages to spacious apartments in bustling town centres.

Esperance’s Surf and Swim Beaches

The coast is lined with rugged cliffs, lush national parks and pristine beaches. Among these stretches of sand is Lucky Bay, considered to be the whitest beach in Australia. The sheltered swimming beach is nestled within Cape Le Grand National Park.

As you stroll along the beach, you will have prime views of the Recherche Archipelago’s 110 islands. No other humans bay be present, but you might not be alone to enjoy the sun. Wild kangaroos are known to lounge on the beach, too.

Travellers who prefer surfing can choose from a variety of other destinations, including West Beach, Fourth Beach and Observatory Beach, the latter being just a 5 minute walk from Esperance’s town centre.

Water Sports and Activities

Visitors to the Goldfields’ waterfront have access to a number of aquatic activities. The clear waters hugging the shore are ideal for snorkelling and diving, notably at Blue Haven Beach or Twilight Cove, just a short distance from the town of Esperance.

Fishermen, meanwhile, have their own spots to congregate, such as Tanker Jetty. If you’d rather not fish, strolling along the jetty is still worth it to spot friendly local seals going about their business. A number of whale, dolphin and seal watching cruises also depart from Esperance, taking you out to discover the Rercherche Archipelago and its wildlife.

Goldfields Culture and History

Kalgoorlie-Boulder is the largest city in the Goldfields region, home to a series of art galleries and museums. To delve into Aboriginal culture and art, visit the Flying Doctor’s Visitors Centre. Kalgoorlie was once a hub for gold mining. Visitors can learn all about the area’s gold rush of the late 19th century.

Let history spring back to life and spend some time at the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame, set on a once operational miners’ campsite. You can also tour Gwalia’s ghost town, well worth a visit to feel like you are a protagonist in an old Western.

If you’re staying close to Balladonia, check out the remains of NASA’s Skylab, on the site where it crash-landed. For a taste of celtic history, visit a Stonehenge duplicate on your way to Cape Le Grand.

National Parks: Wildlife and Walking Trails

Hiking and camping opportunities abound within Cape Le Grand National Park. Bring your camera and snap some shots of the granite summits. Wander through heathlands teeming with birdlife and wildflowers. The park grazes the coast and veers further inland, with trails affording glimpses into the changing scenery.

Cape Arid National Park features a combination of granite hills and lush forests. The reserve is home to many different endangered bird and plant species. Venture along the park’s inland trails, such as taking the Mt Ragged Walk Trail, to best observe these species. Alternately, stick to the waterfront and opt for Talon Coastal Trail, which offers plenty of rugged seascapes and lookouts for dolphin and whale watch.

Getting to the Goldfields and Esperance

Travellers can fly to Esperance and Kalgoorlie from Perth in just over an hour, or drive in about 7. A train also connects Kalgoorlie to Perth in about 7 hours and a bus service links Esperance to the capital in 10 hours.
