Our studio is a modern, open plan large room 10m x 10m with a lounge, dining table, kitchenette sink and bench top and wood fire.
The room has a separate ensuite with shower and toilet.
The spa is located outside on east end of the undercover veranda which is 20m long and 4m wide, with excellent views and an outdoor dining setting with BBQ.
Please note that Tanen Farm is located in an agricultural area. This means that on occasion you will distantly hear farm machinery operating and the sounds of cows, chickens and sheep as they go about their business. It all adds to the charm of your stay.
Tanen is located with the Shire of Plantagenet which is famous for its wines and food. Indeed there are over ten wineries within a ten minute drive of Tanen, so if you like the odd glass of red or white, or perhaps a nice port, then you will be in your element at Tanen.
The property also backs onto the spectacular Porongurup Ranges which is a bush-walkers and bird-lovers paradise. There are many walks to choose from all graded for difficulty and easily accessible from Tanen.
Being centrally located between Mount Barker and Albany there are a range of resturants and cafe choices for you to enjoy. Thai treats, pub-tucker, chinese and italian dishes are all just a short drive away.
A Day at Tanen
Nestled in the shadow of the Porongurup Range lies “Tanen” and nearby is a wine growing region known for its peppery Shiraz and world-class Riesling. But that’s just the beginning, the heart of WA’s Great-Southern, is one of those rare places where scenic beauty meets genuine friendliness, fantastic food and hospitality.
Awake to the early morning sight of Western Gray Kangaroos grazing in the grassy area on the edge of the forest and the raucous chortling of kookaburras, have a leisurely breakfast overlooking the valley all the way to Albany, then dust off your hiking boots and you are on your way....
Scrambling down from Devil’s Slide, you head across the mountain and up again to Nancy’s Peak for more head-in-the-clouds scenery and the purple haze, in spring, of bluebells along the ridge.
The descent trails through dense forest, providing a welcome respite from the sun, and emerges at the famous Tree in the Rock, a karri tree growing tenaciously from the crevice of a granite boulder.
The round trip takes three hours and by then of course you will have worked up an appetite. The Porongurup Village Tearoom offers a home-cooked menu including toasted focaccia with fresh fillings and a salad from the garden. The food tastes divine, or is it the mountain air?
With the clock slipping past noon it won’t take too much to convince you that it is a respectable hour to indulge in a little of what the Porongurups are famous for – wine.
Your first stop is Jingalla, a family-run winery which produces whites, reds and the creatively named ‘Pawny Tort’, a moniker embargo.
Just up the road is Abbey Creek Vineyard, owned and run by Michael Dilworth. The label has notched up several awards for its cabernet-sauvignon-merlot as well as taking out champion small winery last year. An impressive feat for just 2ha of vineyard.
No tour of the Porongurups would be complete without a visit to Duke’s, where you will be greeted by ducks and donkeys and poured tastings by Ian Ranson aka Duke. His Riesling is medal-winning, the sparkling shiraz is a gem and, despite your best intentions, you are bound to walk out with a case of each
TIP: make sure to get a “Porongurup Passport”, available at all wineries in the area, and receive a $10 voucher for every five bottles of wine you buy.
Come back to Tanen, shower, change and select one of the day’s wine purchases, say a bottle of Jingalla’s Shimmer shiraz merlot, and take off to Maleeya’s Thai before you leave take a few moments to enjoy the glorious reds, oranges, pinks and yellows of the ever-changing and colourful sunsets at Tanen as the sun dips below the horizon of Albany and King George Sound.
Maleeyas will be full of people and the sweet smell of coriander when you arrive. The tom yum soup is the best we have ever had and the jungle curry has just the right amount of bite. It’s easy to see why there’s never a spare seat.
In the morning as the sun rises over the mountains in a riotous blaze of pink and the kookaburras are at it again, we think you will be catching would be laughing too, it you lived here at Tanen; and the desire to wake up and explore will overcome even the biggest of sleepyheads
