Point Moore Lighthouse and Osprey's Nest
Situated just 100 metres from Ospreys Beach Chalet and five minutes from Geraldton’s town centre, the views of the ocean from the lighthouse are stunning. Walk along the point and take advantage of a great photo opportunity.
The red and white candy stripes of Point Moore Lighthouse are a spectacular sight that stands out proudly amidst the Geraldton landscape. Standing 34 metres high it was the first all steel tower built on the mainland of Australia, back in 1878. With its bold colours, the lighthouse has become an icon of the port town of Geraldton.
The lighthouse is not open to the public; however you can walk around the bottom of the lighthouse and read the new interpretive plaque that has been put up. It provides some interesting facts about the lighthouse and its history.
The Osprey's nest, also just a 100 metre walk from Ospreys Beach Chalet is a must see. The Osprey, sometimes known as the sea hawk, fish eagle or fish hawk, is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey. It is a large raptor, reaching more than 60 cm in length and 180 cm across the wings. It is brown on the upperparts and predominantly greyish on the head and underparts, with a black eye patch and wings.
The Osprey tolerates a wide variety of habitats, nesting in any location near a body of water providing an adequate food supply. As its other common name suggests, the Osprey's diet consists almost exclusively of fish. It possesses specialised physical characteristics and exhibits unique behaviour to assist in hunting and catching prey.
The breeding season begins around April to July, then In spring the pair begins a five-month period of partnership to raise their young. The female lays two to four eggs within a month, and relies on the size of the nest to conserve heat. The eggs are whitish with bold splotches of reddish-brown and are about 6.2 by 4.5 cm and weigh about 65 g. The eggs are incubated for about 5 weeks to hatching. The newly hatched chicks weigh only 50–60 g, but fledge in 8–10 weeks.
Point Moore Wind Surfing, Kite Surfing and Surfing Spots
Ideal for wave riding and bump and jump sailing; the Point is the windiest location in Geraldton as it is situated at the end of a land mass that juts 4 kilometres out to sea and therefore receives the wind first. It is perfect in the mornings for beginners with the late morning and afternoon providing the right conditions for intermediate advanced windsurfing.
Point Moore has a grassed rigging area and shower / toilet facilities. The wave sailing locations at the point are..
Hell's Gates - a left-hander that breaks fast and can hold a huge swell. Not for the faint hearted, this is for advanced and expert riders only.
Front Yards - another fast breaking left-hander that breaks into a deep water channel, making for a softer landing if your timing is out. A popular spot for all levels except for when mast high plus.
Kiddies Corner - A small, boom high, left-hander that breaks in shallow water for beginner to intermediate wave sailors.
