Kalbarri: Inside Nature’s Kaleidoscope

Visiting Kalbarri is like stepping inside a giant kaleidoscope. From turquoise waters and white sand to ochre gorges and wildflowers in varying shades of pink and purple, it won’t be difficult to tick off the rainbow’s entire palette during your stay.

Outdoor activities in Kalbarri abound. Discover pristine beaches for swimming, snorkelling and surfing. Wander around a tropical parrot sanctuary. Canoe through the gorges of the national park that surrounds town. From July to October, take in 12,000+ types of wildflowers bloom. In June and November, observe migrating whales swim by close to shore.

Holiday rentals in Kalbarri range from family homes near the foreshore pelican feedings to quaint riverfront cottages.

Kalbarri Waterways and Beaches

Kalbarri’s beaches are known for their white sand. Chinaman’s Beach, where the Murchison River meets the Indian Ocean, is just steps from the town centre. The calm waters are favoured by swimmers and snorkelers. Paddleboats are also up for hire.

If you’d prefer to do some surfing, head to Jacques Point, a short drive from Kalbarri. Venture along the clifftop path backing the beach and keep your eyes peeled for dolphins. Don’t leave before dusk settles in to catch a famous Kalbarri sunset.

Kalbarri is located on the banks of the Murchison River, which flows into the ocean between sandstone cliffs. This is one of the state’s premier fishing destinations, notably for bream and whiting. You can also wade in the river’s tidal pools or do some canoeing. Hop aboard a cruise to find out more about the Murchison’s ecosystem.

Exploring Kalbarri National Park

Kalbarri National Park surrounds the town, providing ample walking, hiking and abseiling opportunities. Several trails lead to scenic lookouts, offering hinterland and sea views. For views of Murchison Gorge’s ochre rocks, trek up to Nature’s Window lookout. After heavy rain, some of the park’s gorges fill up enough for canoeing.

For sweeping Indian Ocean panoramas, opt for the 8 km Bigurda Trail, which winds along the coast, starting within Kalbarri National Park and ending close to the town centre. Stroll along the cliffs and, during migration season, look out for whales. Popular whale watching spots include Mushroom Rock and Pot Alley.

Wildlife and Wildflowers in Kalbarri

Open to the public, Rainbow Jungle is a breeding area for parrots. Venture along paved paths as the colourful birds swoop by. Don’t forget your binoculars to observe cockatoos, lorikeets and South American macaws fluttering about in the free-flight reserve. The park is just 4 km from Kalbarri’s main street and also features a maze, picnic area and open air cinema.

From July to October, Kalbarri and the surrounding area bursts into colour. This part of the Coral Coast is home to the most wildflower species in the world. Join a wildflower tour organized by the Kalbarri visitor centre to see as many of the 12,000 varieties as possible, keeping in mind that 60% of these wildflowers do not bloom anywhere else on the planet.

Kalbarri for Families

If you’re travelling with the kids, you will have many ways of keeping them busy. Start your day along the Murchison River foreshore to witness pelican feedings. These feedings occur between April and February, rain or shine. Don’t forget to set your alarm - the activity begins at 8:45 a.m.

Spend some time at Kalbarri Family Entertainment Centre, with a wide range of attractions for kids of all ages. Play some mini golf or see how high the kids can jump on the trampolines. The centre also rents out bikes. Meanwhile, budding equestrians can opt for a horse ride through the hinterland and along the banks of the Murchison River.
