Lancelin: Where the Sun Rises and Sets Over Sand Dunes

A fishing village set between sand dunes and the Indian Ocean, Lancelin is an increasingly popular holiday destination close to Perth. The town has much for visitors to do, from sand dune surfing to diving past a series of shipwreck sites. If all you want is a lazy beach holiday, simply set up camp for the day on Lancelin’s main beach, which stretches as far as the eye can see. While Lancelin is becoming increasingly in demand, the fishing village retains its quiet, seaside charm. You can stay in a range of holiday rentals, most of which have views of the water or of the sand dunes behind town.

Lancelin Beach

Lancelin Beach is composed of fine white sand, the type that is perfect for making sand castles. Walk the length of the beach, which runs for 1.8km, and take in views of the small islands just off shore. If you’re bringing the family pet on holiday, that’s not a problem. Lancelin Beach is dog-friendly. The beach is protected from rough waves by reefs on either side. As such, there is ample room for safe swimming. Relax on the beach or in the shade of the leafy reserve just beyond the sand.

Lancelin’s Watersport Scene

Lancelin’s economy once relied on fishing, specializing in crayfish. The town’s fishermen still uphold that tradition and you will often be able to watch them at work. The reefs close to shore represent the natural habitat of a number of fish species, increasing the likelihood of a good catch. If you’d prefer to simply observe the fish, rent some diving gear and hit the renowned dive trail that meanders along the coast. In addition to spotting numerous marine creatures, you will be able to see 14 shipwrecked vessels. Each Year in January, Lancelin hosts windsurfing championships, where windsurfers the world-over congregate.

Deserts and Sand Dunes

Around Lancelin, sand doesn’t stop at the waterfront. Just a short way from town are Western Australia’s most impressive sand dunes. For over 2 kilometres, you will see nothing but white sand. This is a popular spot for sand surfing or 4WD tours. For prime photo ops, visit the dunes at sunrise or sunset and watch the brilliant colors shimmer beyond the sand. Just 4 km from town, the Pinnacles Desert is another example of unique Western Australian landscape. Sharp, golden rocks break through the sand, distinctly reminiscent of a long-forgotten city’s towers. The sunrise and sunset can also be taken in from the Pinnacles Desert, so bring your camera.

Lancelin Island and Edwards Island

While in Lancelin, you can rent a kayak or paddleboat and visit the two small islands close to shore. Lancelin and Edwards Island have been adopted by surfers, so you might see some locals hitting the waves as you walk along the islands’ shores. Try your hand at surfing but beware: sharks do frequently swim in these waters. Both Lancelin Island and Edwards Island provide an ideal setting for wildlife observation. Throughout the year, you will be able to watch dolphins frolic in the waves and seals sun themselves on the rocks. You are most likely to spot dolphins early in the morning as you venture along Edwards Island’s beach. In season, you might also be able to see some migrating whales.

How to Get to Lancelin

Getting to Lancelin is very easy, as the holiday destination is only 127 kilometres down the coast from Perth. Drive in under 2 hours. If you don’t have a car, you can take a coach with direct service to and from the WA capital.
