Mandurah: Golf, Fish and Swim the Day Away

Mandurah, WA, is consistently voted one of the most liveable towns in the world by the United Nations, so it is no surprise that holiday homes have multiplied in this laidback community by the beach in recent years. Families, retirees and fishing enthusiasts flock to this part of the coast for relaxed breaks spent mostly outdoors. Hit the waves, hire a charter and go out to sea or simply stroll along Mandurah’s foreshore to soak up the small beach town atmosphere. Beyond the waterfront, golfers can choose from several professionally-designed courses. Short term rentals in Mandurah abound, ranging from studios to spacious villas.

Mandurah’s Beaches

Visitors to Mandurah have access to several local beaches only a short distance from the heart of town. If you’re travelling with children and are looking for calm waters, head to Silver Sands Beach, which is known for its consistently low surf. Spend the day splashing around in the waves and don’t hesitate to bring the family pet, as Silver Sands Beach is dog-friendly. Mandurah’s surf beach, Halls Head, also welcomes dogs. Halls Head stretches on as far as the eye can see and offers more rambunctious waves. If you don’t feel like riding the waves, go for a long stroll on the sand. Right next to the beach, you’ll find ample picnic facilities.

Mandurah’s Foreshore Action

You’ll find Mandurah’s locals hanging out along the foreshore by Mandjar Bay, which is always bustling with activity. There might even be some dolphins frolicking in the coastal waters there to greet you. Throughout the year, festivals, art shows and street performances liven up the boardwalk, with summer being the most active time for Mandurah’s foreshore. In addition to free live entertainment, a series of cafes and restaurants can be found on the water’s edge. A number of shaded paths lead you from the foreshore to Mandurah’s town centre and continue onwards throughout the small community.

Fishing and Crabbing in Mandurah

Nicknamed Crab City, Mandurah, predictably, is an active crabbing base. As such, you can sample local crab at many restaurants throughout town or try to catch your own at the region’s beaches or offshore. Whether you are a veteran fisherman or complete novice, Mandurah offers the opportunity to exercise the craft. Hire your own charter for the day and head out to the open water to reel in a variety of species. Alternately, take part in a guided fishing tour, with the option to have your catch cleaned for you, so all you have to do is throw it on the grill. Another possibility involves fishing right off the beach, a sport widely practiced by locals.

Golf and Shopping in Mandurah

If you aren’t in Mandurah for the waterfront action, chances are you’re visiting for the golf. This prime golfing destination boasts three courses in town, each with challenging courses. With Kennedy Bay, Meadow Springs Country Club and Secret Harbour Golf Links designed by pro golfers and open to the public, you can pick your favourite or try all three while visiting Mandurah. Once you’ve gotten your golf fix, spend some time discovering Mandurah’s five distinct shopping precincts, which offer a mix of individually-owned boutiques and big name brands.

Getting to Mandurah

Mandurah is set only an hour-and-a-half from Perth. Recently, a new highway was added, linking the WA capital to the seaside town. While the easiest way to get to Mandurah is by car, visitors can also take advantage of some public transport options.
